Sustainable buildings: a reality Local Renewables 2007, Freiburg 13-15 June 2007 Moderator: Dr Rajat Gupta, [email_address]
For millennia, we have lived in passive buildings
We know the climate is changing because of our actions

UK carbon emissions in 2000: 150 MtC Derived from DTI Energy Report 2000 Current Buildings are a large part of the problem Buildings can change rapidly without pain. Over 40% of final energy consumption in the European Community (EC) occurs in the buildings sector. Buildings 75 Million Tonnes (50%) 35 Million tonnes Industry 40 Million tonnes Transport Non-Domestic 35 Million tonnes Domestic 40 Million tonnes
Central London is up to 8 0 C hotter that Heathrow Irradiation mapping for 3D City Models (IESD, De Montfort University) Solar shading by buildings in irradiation maps Tall exposed buildings suffer most The Urban Heat Islands of Cities increase
Sustainable Buildings are part of the Solution To be as low energy as possible to protect the occupants from the inevitable rises in energy cost. Paradigm of sustainable buildings To get as much of the energy needed as possible from renewable energy. To have as little impact on the environment as possible in terms of water, waste materials, transport. To make buildings that people love to live in.
Under the main provisions of the Directive, member states to Apply a methodology to calculate the energy performance of buildings. Apply minimum performance standards on all new buildings and on existing large buildings (over 1000 m 2 ), when subject to material alterations. Ensure that when a building changes occupants an energy performance certificate is made available and displayed in all public buildings. Legislative driver: EU Directive on Building Energy Performance

Sustainable design is not a style and that there is nothing called as ‘Sustainable Aesthetic’. Sustainability in buildings is about the performance of buildings, about designing every building on the fundamental premise that it must do as little environmental damage as possible. Understanding the benchmarks of building performance at every stage: DESIGN, CONSTRUCTION and OPERATION. The difficulty is to know how sustainable a building is?

Predicts resulting CO 2 savings and cost-benefits of deploying energy efficiency measures and renewables in households. A tool to track progress of take-up of measures. www.decorum-model.org.uk
The Mataro Library, Barcelona We can use Solar Energy - even for air conditioning!
Tough choices have to be made!!!!
