Paper survey of our target
audience results and analysis
rLb pictures
We surveyed 20 participants, 10 boys and 10 girls in order to gain a representative, fair
sample.
We made sure that we surveyed people who were mostly in our target audience age range (late
teens-20 year olds).
Our results told us that 17/20 people listen to music everyday. This was a very high statistic
which we found very helpful to us as it meant that our survey had been completed by people
who were active consumers of music and showed us just how important music is to teenagers
and how it helps shape the people they become and influences them e.g. through fashion,
etc.
Our audience feedback showed us that the most popular genres of music for teenagers were
Indie-Rock and Pop. This helped us in guiding us as to which genre we would like to work in
and to see if teenagers would consume this style of music. Rap was also a fairly popular
genre, however, we want to make sure that we target the majority in order to generate the
most sales and represent the majority of teenagers.
11/20 participants highlighted that their taste in music influenced their dress sense. This
indicated to us that the styling of an artist can have a very important impact on teenagers as
they are particularly impressionable. The vote therefore showed us that we would have to put
great emphasis on the styling of our artist in order to appear relatable and allow our target
audience to identify with our artist.
17/20 participants stated that they enjoyed watching music videos. We therefore
realised that this was an important social platform for teenagers to interact with music
and their favourite artists.
13/20 people said that they watched music videos ‘often’, indicating that videos are important
in their day to day lives. The fact that teenagers consume music in this way showed us how
important having a good music video was.
Most of the people surveyed stated that they watched music videos mainly on the internet.
Some also said through TV, however the majority said the Internet provided this platform.
This therefore showed us the importance of having the music video available on the internet,
for example, on popular social networking sites, YouTube, etc.
12 people stated that music videos were an important part of their music experience. This
showed us how vital music videos were to teenagers and in the way that they consume
new music.
The three most popular elements that were cited were; dancing, close ups of the artist and
partying. This therefore showed us of the kinds of themes/scenes we should include in our own
music video and showed us how to follow conventions.
16/20 participants said that they preferred to watch narrative and performance music
videos compared to solely performance or narrative. This may be because they are more
entertaining, however, it suggested to us that this is what we too should create in order to
appeal to/attract our core target audience.
The two most popular answers for this question were; clothing and lighting. We therefore
realised that within our music video, these were the elements we should place most emphasis
on.
14/20 people surveyed said that they liked the use of digital effects in music videos. This
showed us that this was a popular convention of music videos and suggested that when
creating our own we too should consider their use as an effective tool in attracting our target
audience e.g use of black and white.
16/20 participants indicated that watching a music video led them to buying the song. This
therefore outlined the power and importance of the music video and on how it works as a
promotional/marketing tool and is successful in complimenting the song. This showed us that if
the music video was powerful it could generate sales for the song.
Paper survey of our target audience results and analysis
We received a wide range of songs and genres from this question. However, common
comments included things like; styling of the artist, digital effects and lighting. This
therefore showed us to create a successful music video in the eyes of our target
audience.
