       Patterns and Boxes
Assignment:
After completing Pareidolia and Contour-Line, you are ready for this project.
Use the patterns that you invented in the former, and the compositional logic you
developed in the latter. Pay close attention to the boxes and their vanishing points.

       1. Using an HB pencil and your t-square, create a “frame” to help you understand
       compositional logic.
       2. Create several vertical plumb-lines to assist with placing objects.
       3. Draw a “bubble” to guide the composition
       3. Begin to sketch the composition, moving from general to specific. Pay close attention
to eye-level and the foreshortening of various objects. Remember that the sides of
boxes disappear in to a “vanishing point”, and that if you cannot see the top of an
object, you should not draw it.
       4. Once your pencil sketch is complete, begin to replace your lines with pen using the
       sharpies.
       5. Fill in the planes of the boxes with pattern, making sure to leave one face of each box
empty. All the empty planes should be facing in the same direction.

Objectives:
Naturalistic depiction of real objects in space.
Understand of eye-level, foreshortening, and vanishing point.
Composition and scale within a picture plane.
       Contour line and line weight.
Use and invention of pattern using varying qualities of line.
       Creativity and imagination.
Overall technical proficiency and a high level of craftsmanship.

Grading Rubric:
CONCEPT/DESIGN (40 pts) : The project makes use of line, foreshortening, pattern,
compositional unity, and balance. There is variety but also unity in the picture elements.
CRAFT/PROFESSIONALISM (40pts): The project is neat and precise, there are no
blemishes, scratches or scuffs that distract the viewer.
CREATIVITY/ORIGINALITY (20pts): Are your patterns inventive? Is your composition
       creative and original?
