Perception is the process by which individuals organize and interpret their sensory impressions to make meaning of their environment. It involves the five senses - touch, sight, sound, smell and taste. Perception requires sensation and past experience, and involves selecting, receiving, organizing and interpreting external information. It is both objective and subjective, and is influenced by the perceiver, the object perceived, and the surrounding environment. Perception skills can be improved by enhancing self-awareness, seeing other perspectives, having a positive attitude, improving self-esteem, avoiding biases, communicating effectively, and avoiding making assumptions without sufficient information.
