- 2. About the Article Narcissists seek attention from others and seek out people they can manipulate. A narcissist will appear to be calm in a group setting; however, when they feel threatened, their response can be punitive, shaming, or blaming. This is often toward a person with antisocial behaviors. When seeking treatment, a narcissist will do a background check on a social worker therapist to see if they are “good enough” to provide services. Often, the narcissist is non-compliant with the treatment plan and continues to push the blame (Chen et al., 2021).
- 3. Ethical Diemma I was raised by a single mother who fled Mexico after my father threatened to kill my mother. Growing up, I was used as a pawn between my narcissistic mother and my two older sisters (14 & 15 years older than me); this continued until my mid-thirties. I was told it was my fault my mother was a single mother, and I was responsible for her leaving her life in Mexico; I was 2yr old when we left Mexico. - 4. Ethical Standard 1.01 Commitment to Clients Social workers’ primary responsibility is to promote the well-being of clients. In general, clients’ interests are primary. However, social workers’ responsibility to the larger society or specific legal obligations may, on limited occasions, supersede the loyalty owed clients, and clients should be so advised. (Examples include when a social worker is required by law to report that a client has abused a child or has threatened to harm self or others.) (NASW, 2023)

Step to Address Knowing that my bias is toward the narcissist who dismisses others, puts them down, and belittles others for their gain, I understand that talking with an abuser with narcissistic traits can trigger me due to my personal experience with a narcissist. Therefore, I will need to continue to seek supervision from my direct supervisor during my internship or field instructor for possible countertransference and to ensure the client’s needs are met regardless of my bias. As a social worker, I can not choose my clients; all clients deserve to be treated with dignity and respect (NASW, 2023)
