Homework Identify 3 different ways that a games players’ arousal may be increased (3 marks) For a named activity, explain how a sportsman could be extrinsically motivated (3 marks)
Arousal Arousal is a state of readiness or alertness. All sportsmen need to be aroused if they are to perform at their best. Look at the graph and explain how arousal affects performance.
Goal Setting Learning Intention – TBAT describe and explain the importance of Goal Setting as part of mental preparation
Goal Setting This is a process of setting ACHIEVABLE goals for a performer to work towards in order to improve. This can help increase motivation especially if each goal is broken down into smaller parts. Goal setting can really benefit the novice or beginner in that they can concentrate on just one aspect of the activity before moving onto the next one. For example setting a goal of being able to perform a 3 minute routine on a trampoline is to large for a beginner. But breaking the individual skills down and over a series of weeks adding to your skills. A chart can be used to monitor an individual in any activity.
Goal Setting Swim all strokes effectively and be able to compete Learn the correct techniques for the 4 major strokes Able Swim longer distances without stopping Improve arm and leg action Weak Swim one width unaided To be confident in water. To put face in water Beginner Long Term Short Term Swimming
SMARTER As we have just said in order to keep motivated we need to set achievable smaller goals that are part of a larger goal. To do this correctly we should use the S.M.A.R.T.E.R. principle
SMARTER S – Specific not vague M – Measurable have a standard to measure against A – Adjustable by both coach and performer R – Realistic possible to achieve T – Time related reach each target in a specific time E – Exciting motivating and interesting R – Recorded write down what you have achieved. Write these definitions down, BUT, add examples of how YOU could use these in training for your sport.
With a partner, decide upon a sport, and discuss what some of the short term and long term targets might be, for A beginner. A weak performer A more able performer Able Weak Beginner Long Term Short Term Sport:
Questions What does SMARTER stand for? What can cause pressure on a performer? What is the difference between extrinsic and intrinsic motivation? What is the most important thing to consider when setting a goal?
Exam Question 1. Explain why the performer who is totally focused when participating in Games may have an advantage over someone who is less focused. [3] 2. Three marks, one mark for each correct response Clear mind off everything but activity, more alert Concentrate on tactics Mental rehearsal of skills Able to apply game plans / strategies Performance is likely to be better, more chance of winning More likely to attain personal high standard / excel More likely to make correct decisions / do the right thing. More competitive (reaction time, components of fitness etc) Psychological benefits if applied. Negative perspective exemplar – less focused, may result in injury [3]
