This document discusses different definitions of philosophy and addresses common stereotypes. It defines philosophy as: (1) an academic discipline, (2) a set of beliefs or worldview, and (3) rational inquiry into difficult questions through generating and evaluating ideas. The stereotypes of philosophy involving "mental masturbation" and "intellectual bullying" are examined. Being open-minded and critical involves considering alternative beliefs without preference while accepting existing beliefs could be false. While critical thinking is difficult, it is important for improving reasoning skills and gaining a more well-rounded perspective.
