- 1. Geography PE Centre TaskPresented By:Josh Hoggett, Matthew Dowsett, Robert Deppeler and Scott Richardson
- 2. Why Pre-Cast Concrete Walls?Using conventional concrete walls you will get an R rating of about 0.1 but with insulated concrete you will get a 5 R rating in the summer which will save you enormously on energy bills in the future.
- 3. What is Ionization and Why?HOW DOES IT WORK?: A safe low DC current like that of several flashlight batteries is passed through a set of copper and silver alloy anodes. As the water passes through the sealed chamber, metallic ions are generated to purify the water. The microscopic action of the ions with the algae and bacteria are twofold. First, the algae and bacteria are destroyed through a change in their enzyme processes. Second, all these charged particles flock together and then they are more effectively pulled out by the filter. The ions maintain a stable sanitizer residual in the water until they are used up by this process.How much?: $10,000 is enough to install and run the system not including plumbing (that will keep you running for years without having to buy chlorine and put chemicals into the water)

What is Rainwater Harvesting and Why?Being in a climate like Australia we need to take advantage of all the water we can get.Rather than pumping all the water off the roof and into the pool which would need filtering we would put in tanks that would then lead to outside taps to water the gardens.All excess water would then be used to top up the pool when necessary.

Why Have the Courts and Gym Underground?In our design of the building we have put the Gym and Basketball courts underground for a few reasons:It is easier to cool and air-condition the space.It is also quieter and less distracting for 1st’s and 2nd’s games.To light the Gym and Courts we would use energy efficient and low heat lights.
- 6. Why Adjustable louvers?In our design we have used glass adjustable louvers so that we can let air in or have a window with no breeze at the push of a button depending on what the Shore Council says we can have metal ones instead.
- 7. Why an Arched Roof?Because our roof is facing towards the sun it is a fantastic opportunity for us to put in solar heating for the pool. A good example of how efficient these systems are is in El Cid Hotel, Mazatlan, Mexico:Year Installed: 1993 Pool Surface Area: 40,000 square feet Number of Heliocol Panels: 500 HC-50 Collectors Average Unheated Temperature: 23 C Average Solar Heated Temperature: 32 C Fiscal Payback: Less than 18 months Roof Orientation: Flat Roof Pool Orientation: Indoor and Outdoor Continue

Continued…With this information it is obvious that solar heating is the way to go for Shore when they start construction of their new gym, as from statistics it is proven that the panels would pay themselves off within 2 years and probably 6 months including the cost of the pool leaking and maintenance of the present one. PLEASE NOTE: The reason that we have not used solar panels is because of their expense compared to solar water heaters and also that using electricity to heat a pool is also very inefficient. Here are some pictures of the solar water heating in Mexico and some interesting charts we have found:
- 9. Why Basketball/Tennis Courts?In our design we have included basketball courts (which are like those near the carpark) – they can have nets put in and be turned into a tennis court. We will also have nets so that if a ball is hit near the pool it will hit the net and be collected.
- 10. What Plants?In our plant selection we have used no exotics as too many of them cause allergic reactions to some people and are not suited to our climate. To make up for the lack of exotics we have used very colourful and bright natives which are low allergen.
- 11. The Plants:Narrow-leafed hop bush is a tall shrub of 2-3 metres which is commonly found growing on the light sandy soils of Australia. The species is very hardy, being able to tolerate a wide range of conditions, and is therefore widespread throughout Australia.The reason this plant would be good for our building is that it is hardy and doesn’t need much water so it would be easy to look after.An Australian native that can reach 6-8m but can be kept to 1.5m. It has dark green leaves and rich red tubular flowers in summer. The flowers are attractive to nectar feeding birds. This plant would be excellent for our sports centre so we can position it on the grass away from the sports centre so the birds head over there. Lily pillies are an Australian native that vary in size the size we would like would be the under 2 meters called ‘royal flames’ these would be a great addition to the centre with amazing beauty for low prices. The Wollemi Pine is one of the earth’s oldest and rarest plants dating back to the time of the dinosaurs. There are less than 100 Wollemi pines left in the wild today so being an environmentally friendly school we could plant a few of this amazing species to help this dying population. The Waratah is an old historic Australian plant which is very beautiful. It has beautiful red to orange/red flowers highly bird attracting bushy growth habit grows easily from cuttings or seed. This plant can survive in very hot climate but will need a fair bit of watering.

- 16. Our Design InspirationIan Thorpe Aquatic Centre inspired us with it’s futuristic look and amazing lines. The public center was designed by Harry Seidler and it is world renowned.
