https://orcid.org/0000-0003-3399-3865
Outline:
• First research project involvement at MIT….BSc in Physics
• PhD project at University of California, Berkeley
• Role as Director of an Astronomical Observatory
• Founder of transdisciplinary observatory of astronomy, ecology,
environmental sciences and Oceanography (Institut Pytheas)
• Leonardo Journal on arts, sciences and technologies, MIT Press
• The UTD ArtSci Lab: bringing together disciplines on hard problems
• Deep Sensing of NASA JWST data: with Prof Lindsey King and
Antareep Gogoi
• NASA Virtual Reality Problem Solving on Mars: Alejandro Garcia
• and…
Some Lessons Learned
• The thrill of discovery; whether you observe something or not
• But: beware of confirmation bias
• Apophenia: coincidence-serendipity- synchronicity-conspiracy theory
• The difficulty of collaborating with people from other disciplines
• NASA: scientists, engineers, administrators, publishers, conference
organisers…
• Observatory director
• Bureaucrat: finding money for others, enforcing regulations
• Exoplanet Discovery : success by association
• Transdisciplinary Management: Creation of Institut Pytheas
• Astronomy
• Oceanography
• Environmental Sciences
• Ecology
Hindsight; things I learned about too late
• The science of complex systems and different concepts of “causality”
• Emergence, Auto-poesis…..
• Evolution of the scientific methods themselves
• Making science “socially robust” -- the ‘queens of the sciences”
• The concept of hybrid professional : but deeply disciplinary is fine
• Desirable Outcomes rather than Success Criteria: (social eg ethics
and Logical)
• Ethics and Morals
• Intellectual Property theft
• Secrecy decisions
• Interpersonal relations
“You are the company you keep”
•Solomon proverb:
•He that walketh with wise people shall be wise: but a
companion of fools shall be destroyed.
•But correlation is not always causation especially in
complex systems
•Beware: Birds of a feather flock together
•But sometimes homogeneity is desirable
• Retirement homes

Pandora's Cluster, four billion light-years away, is a collision of galaxy
clusters, dark matter, and cosmic gases that unveil universe-shaping
forces. Multiple telescopes have collected various types of data,
making it perfect for use in an engaging multisensory art installation for
visitors to “experience” deep space!

MEET THE TEAM
Our multidisciplinary team of artists, scientists, and designers is dedicated to crafting
an experience that transcends the boundaries of traditional exhibitions.
ART INSTALLATION
Opening January 6, 2024 at the Eisemann Center for the Performing
Arts!
• Artwork will use visualization and sonification to communicate
scientific concepts and create an interactive and Immersive
artistic experience.
Upon exiting, visitors can
also relay real time
impressions to convey a
generative word cloud
“artwork” created by the
community and displayed
throughout the Art Center.
Maybe
•We will make a scientific discovery because of
collaboration between artists and scientists

ArtSciLab questions arising
• What colour should objects be painted on Mars
• What kind of art would people on Mars
• What toys would people invent to play with on Mars
• FOR VISITING CHILDREN
• For kids born on mars
• how would martian human culture evolve differentlyu
The Evolving Scientific Method(s)
• Physical « Laws »:
– Compact Descriptions of the World, maths, logic..
– Experiments on the world
• Simulations:
– Virtual Worlds that mimic our World
– Retrodiction vs Prediction
– Quantum Supercomputing
• Pattern Recognition:
– The « petabyte » era, « big data » (most data is never analysed)
– Doing experiments on data about the world
– Extrapolation vs Explanation
– Artificial Intelligence
Impacts of technologies on scientific methods
• The period is figuring out how Artificial Intelligence might help
advance scientific methods,
• Collective Intelligence (connecting “neurons} Roy Ascott Lab
• Artificial Wisdom project with Tsinghua University, China
–Unlike the turing test for intelligence, wisdom is not always
transcultural
• AI Curation in Chinese Museums
• Mitpress: AI peer reviewing ?
• AI as co-authors on published papers ?
• After AI what might alter the scientific methods ? (G.E ?)
SCIENCE OF TEAM SCIENCE
Science of Team Science
