Projectile Motion
Understanding the physics of motion
in two dimensions
What is Projectile Motion?
• Projectile motion refers to the motion of an
object thrown or projected into the air,
subject to only the acceleration of gravity. It is
a two-dimensional motion combining
horizontal and vertical motion.
Components of Projectile Motion
• - Horizontal motion: Uniform, with constant
velocity
• - Vertical motion: Accelerated, with constant
acceleration due to gravity (9.8 m/s²)
Equations of Motion
• For horizontal motion:
• - Displacement: x = v₀ₓ * t
• For vertical motion:
• - Displacement: y = v₀ᵧ * t - 0.5 * g * t²
• - Final velocity: vᵧ = v₀ᵧ - g * t
Range and Maximum Height
• Range (R): The horizontal distance covered by
the projectile
• - R = (v₀² * sin(2θ)) / g
• Maximum Height (H): The highest vertical
position reached
• - H = (v₀² * sin²θ) / (2g)
Factors Affecting Projectile Motion
• - Initial velocity (v₀)
• - Angle of projection (θ)
• - Acceleration due to gravity (g)
• - Air resistance (in real-world scenarios)
Examples of Projectile Motion
• 1. A ball thrown at an angle
• 2. A cannonball shot from a cannon
• 3. A basketball shot towards the hoop
• 4. A long jumper leaping forward
Conclusion
• Projectile motion demonstrates the effects of
both gravity and initial force. Understanding
the principles can help in solving practical
problems in sports, engineering, and other
fields.
