1.2 Organization of Content in Paper

to research advertisements of Thailand, a popular tourist country, because of its recent dramatic
increase in the number of tourists since the start of the new millennium, and because it has appealed to
me as a tourist attraction. Through my analysis of advertisements of multiple media sources I have
found examples of advertisements that promote the branding of cultural and indigenous tourism in
Thailand. I relate to Erve Chambers, the author of Native Tours (2010) research on the authentic
image that is used in many ads to catch the attention of tourists and I discuss how people do not
always experience what was promoted in the media.

of choir students pass English class? In elementary school, I was able to write and read efficiently.
However, my comprehension of what as I read as I got older was not as good as it could have been. I
was able to read books and understand the main points, but often I would forget little details. My past
few years in English have been successful and I have been able to achieve many of the goals I have set

George Crumb, an American avant garde style composer born in 1929, once declared, It is easy to
write unthinking music (Bio.com, American Composers Orchestra). In his piece, Dream Images ,
Crumb intentionally uses both tonal and post tonal techniques, such as set theory, melodic borrowing,
and specific usage of dynamics, to create an unconscious feeling, as if in a dream. Although the theme
of Dream Images is one of unthinking and fantasizing, because of its intricacies, it was definitely a
piece that was pre meditated and well thought out. In his article Total Immersion: George Crumb,
Barbican, David Nice expounds upon the description of Crumb s technique in this piece, stating that
Crumb has a tendency of, opening out towards a sense of sublime just before resolution or dissolution

Earlier in the semester, the class was introduced to topics such as politics within Children s Literature
and learning how to be cultural critics. Both topics generated discussion that was centered around the
contributions that were made within Children s Literature and how they could deepen young reader s
understanding of the content presented to them in children books. I believe the book The Sneetches
and Other Stories by Dr. Seuss would ve been a great addition to the class reading list. In this book,
Dr. Seuss discussed topics such as discrimination, prejudice, acceptance, and tolerance which are all
topics people wouldn t think are suitable for a children s book. The themes were used as underlying
messages throughout the story and the illustration presented a visual to readers, so that they could
have a clear understanding of what Dr. Seuss was writing. The importance of the message was to bring
awareness to the issues that are present within society. Other stories include The Zax , Too Many
Daves , and What Was I Scared Of? . These stories all contribute to reaching out to help young readers
analyze and further understand others who may not always be the same as them. In Dr. Suess s The
Zax , one Zax was going North and one South but because of pride neither one moved to
accommodate the other out of respect. Too Many Daves highlights the lack of originality. It teaches

In the Africa American culture, there has been a longstanding discussion of the black woman s
physical appearance and how they identify themselves in society. Though there are many themes of
the Black experience in the media that discuss the standard of beauty Black women should have.
However, theatre has a creative and tactful way of exploring these topics that are considered taboo in
the African American culture. During the Black Arts Movement, topics such as black empowerment
and self identity were the blue print for what the movement stood for. In reference to, A Brief Guide to
the Black Arts Movement Writers, African American artists within the movement sought to create
politically engaged work that explored the African American cultural and historical experience (A
Brief Guide to the Black Arts Movement Writers.1). Prolific writers such as, Ntozake Shange s, Amari
Baraka, and Nikki Giovanni, just to name a few, were revolutionary in a creative and political
movement, which allowed for writers and poets to demonstrate the pains and qualms of what African
