An introduction
Today
You will be beginning your big, end of year
theory assignment for the first year.
We will recap how we plan a video
production, and then next week we will
recap how we conduct research.
You will start writing your report during this
lesson, then continue with it for 1.5 hours
every Tuesday afternoon for the next 3
weeks.
Watch video
What is pre-production
Is the planning phase of any project. It is
where we think about what we need to
do, how we will do it, who will do it and
when it needs to be done by..
Why do we need to conduct
planning for a video
production?
Why do we need to conduct
planning for a video
production?
Video production is a multi-faceted
operation
That is, there are many different things we need
to pull together, at a certain time and in a certain
place, to make a production happen
What kind of things do we need
to plan?
What we’re filming
When we’re filming
Where we’re filming
Who’s in it
Etc….
What do we need to plan
for?
Lets look at some of the planning we might
need to do for a production.
What do we need to plan
for?
IDEAS
EQUIPMENT
TIME
LOCATION
CAST &
CREW
Now we know what we need to
do we need to think about what
order it needs to be done in.
1. Time planning
Production milestones
One way of helping to set things in the right
order is to decide on your milestones.
This is where you list the jobs in the order you
think they need to be done.
For example, which would you need to do 1st?
Come up with an idea for your music video?
Hire actors and dancers?
Production milestones
By listing the tasks in the order they need
to be complete we can plan to get things
done in the right order, and we won’t fall
behind with our filming.
We can record this on a production
milestones document.
Once we know our
milestones
We can start to plan out what we will do
on a week-by-week or day-by-day basis
using a production schedule.
 Talent & contributors
There are 2 types of people we
need for a production…
 Crew
2. CAST & CREW
 Actors
 Presenters
 Guests on a TV show
 Interviewees on the news
Anyone who we want in front of the
camera. They will not be fulfilling a
technical role.
What do we think talent &
contributors might be?
In the industry we will normally audition
for talent, or find them through research.
We can use websites such as casting call
pro or mandy.com to advertise for actors
and presenters.
Where can we find talent?
A casting director will audition prospective
actors, feeding back to the producer &
director
What do actors want in return
for being in your video?
Who are the crew?
What different job roles are
there on the crew?
If we were planning to make The Muppets:
The Movie 2 which of these would we
need?
or
What do we need to think about
when deciding what crew we
need?
A big action film will probably need:
The crew you need will depend
on the requirements of your
production
Armourer Helicopter pilot
whereas a TV gameshow will need…
The crew you need will depend
on the requirements of your
production
A vision mixer A TV presenter
3. Finance
Finance is an important
part of film-making, but….
What is ‘finance’?
Finance
need.
Is the management of money, and money
related matters.
In film-making, finance
can be best thought of
as the money we have
versus the money we
need.
What do we need money
for?
Lets think about funding for our
crew…
They’ll need the correct
equipment for their
job…
We’ll need to get them
to their location
We need to make sure
they’re fed & watered
during production….
We need to pay them a
fair wage…
Where can we get money from?
A broadcaster might pay us
to make a programme for
them…
(eg. TV show)
A private investor might give us money in
return for a share of the profits….
(eg. A featurefilm)
A client may pay us to make a video for
them… (eg. Music video)
A charitable film fund may give you
money (eg. Feature films)
Once we’ve got our funding we
can budget for our production.
What is a budget?
“…an estimate of income and expenditure for a set period of
time.”
Why do we need to do a
budget?
We need to make sure we have enough
money to pay for all of our costs.
Why do we need to do a
budget?
You have £1000 budget for a music video.
You are filming for 2 days
You need 3 camera operators
Each camera operator costs £200 p/d
Each camera costs £80 for 2 days hire
Total cost = £1440
Total funding = £1000
Loss = £440
What are the implications of
going over-budget?
4. Locations
There are 3 questions we need to answer
when planning filming locations:
Is it suitable?
Is it safe?
Do I have permission to film there?
Is it suitable?
 The look: Does it meet the needs of the
script?
 Travel: can we get there?
 Accommodation: Is it within commuting
distance, or do we need to arrange
accommodation whilst filming?
 Cost: do we have to pay to use it?
Is it safe?
 Can we access the location safely?
 Are there any dangers to the cast and
crew there?
 Can we make the location safe of
dangers?
 Is it open to members of the public, or is
it a closed set?
 Are we insured if someone hurts
themself?
Do I have permission to film
there?
 Ownership: Who owns the land / building /
space?
 Contact: Have I contacted them to
ask permission?
 Proof: Have I got proof that I am allowed to film
there?
This is why we always need to
do a budget for our
productions…
So how do we plan for all this?
Location research
Location recce
Risk assessment
Signed filming permission / evidence
of contact & consent
5. Equipment
What kit do you need for filming?
Tripod? Stabiliser? Track?
Cards or tapes?
What type of camera?
Lighting?
Microphones? Boom poles? Headphones?
Radio mic’s or shotgun mics? XLR cables?
Card readers?
What will you edit it on?
Equipment hire
 Do you need to book it?
 Who from?
 What is a hire house?
 How much will it cost?
 When do you need to pick it up?
 When does it need to be returned by?
6. Legal issues
 What legal issues could you potentially
face?
 What is a consent form?
 Why do you need to do a risk
assessment?
7. Creative planning
 What creative planning do you need to
do?
 What is a script? Who needs it? Why
it is so important?
 What is a storyboard? Who produces
it? Who uses it?
 What is a proposal? Why do we need
to write down our creative ideas?
 What order do you do them in?
8. Extra materials
 What is a soundtrack?
 Where can you get a soundtrack?
 When might you need to use archive
footage?
 What legal problems do you face with
soundtracks & archive footage?
Today
You are going to begin writing your planning &
research theory assignment. This is an
important assignment which will be marked for
both:
 The pre-production unit (Unit:1) (along
with 1 of your planning portfolios)
 The Research unit (Unit:3) (along with your
social action research)
Today
In your report, you will need to
comprehensively explain how video
producers plan & research for different videos.
You will need to draw on your experiences of
planning your short films, music video, your PIF
and your factual programme.
You should explain how we plan differently, for
different types of video production, using
examples to prove your points.
Brief
 The full brief is on Moodle.
 The deadline is 22nd May 2018.
 Your assignment should be handed in to the
Moodle assignment “Research & Planning
Theory”
