● Each event hooks our curiosity
and pulls us forward to the next
event
Plot
● External
○ Takes place between two characters,
a character and a group or between
a character and something
nonhuman
● Internal
○ Within a character’s mind or heart
■ A desire to win someone’s
friendship might conflict with a fear
of rejection
Conflict
● Fuel of narrative
● The greater the conflict, the more
we care about the outcome
Conflict
1. Basic situation or exposition
● opening when characters and conflict are
introduced
2. Complication or Rising action
● Character takes some action to resolve
the conflict but meets with more
complications or problems
The Bare Bones of Plot
3. Climax
● key scene where emotional involvement
is greatest; we learn the outcome
4. Resolution or denouncement
● End of story; all the struggles are over
and we know what happens to the main
characters
The Bare Bones of Plot,
Cont’d.
● Plot is a story framed by time
● Most stories are told in chronological
order, or the order in which events unfold
in real time
○ Author can:
■ Slow down time to emphasize
danger
■ Speed up time to skip events not
relevant to the story or that don’t
move it along
It’s All The Timing
● Flashback: Writer interrupts the flow of
events to present information from the
past
○ Also used to strengthen understanding of
character by revealing a powerful memory
● Flashforward: Writer jumps ahead days
or years into the future
● Foreshadowing: Writer brings future into
the present with hints or clues that
suggest what is to come
