Streptococcus pneumonia

Morphology:
• Gram Positive
• Small in Size and Arranged in Pairs
• They have two ends. One end is Rounded and
other is Pointed
• They are Capsulated (Polysaccharide Capsule)
which Encloses each pair
• Non-Motile and Non-Sporing
Pneumococcus (Morphology & Pathogenesis)
Pathogenesis:
• Most Common Bacterial causing pneumonia,
both Labor and Bronchopneumonia.
1. Labor Pneumonia:
• Results only when the General Resistance is Lowered.
• Common infective type include Type 1-12 in adults.
Type 6,14,19&23 in Children.
2.Bronchopneumonia:
• Always a Secondary infection following viral infections of
Respiratory Tract
• Any Serotype of Pneumococcus can produce
Bronchopneumonia
3. Meningitis:
• It is the most serious of Pneumococcal infections.
• It is more commoner in Children
4. Other Infections:
• Pneumococcus may produce emphysema, Sinusitis,
Conjunctivitis, Suppurative arthritis, usually as a complications
of pneumonia
