INTRODUCTION
This little book is prepared in response to a request from one who is,
perhaps, in as good a position as anyone to know what Christian workers
really want. It is not intended to supplant the larger work, How to Bring
Men to Christ. Any who desire more definite and detailed instruction in the
right use of the Scripture given in this book and in the general work of
soul-winning are referred to the larger volume. Opinions of the most
experienced workers may differ as to which are “the Best Texts” for any
given case, but those quoted in this book are those which have approved
themselves as such in the study and experience of the author.
There is medicine in the Bible for every sin sick soul, but every soul does
not need the same medicine. This book attempts to arrange the remedies
according to maladies.

Dr. Torrey was regarded by multitudes during his lifetime as at the very
top in soul-winning, Bible teaching, and the training of Christian workers.
He was selected by D. L. Moody as the superintendent of Moody Bible
Institute, where he established the Bible Institute curriculum and made
Moody Institute a pattern for Bible institutes around the world. He was also
pastor of Moody Memorial Church, Chicago. His courses on soul-winning
and his practical methods stamped themselves on the lives of Christian
workers by the thousands. Later he was the co-founder of the Bible
Institute of Los Angeles, now Biola College. At the same time he was
pastor of the great Church of the Open Door in Los Angeles.
But Dr. Torrey was primarily an evangelist. After the death of Moody, Dr.
Torrey and Charles M. Alexander held the largest campaigns in America
and then went around the world, winning hundreds of thousands of souls
in great campaigns in Australia, New Zealand, and the British Isles, and on
the mission fields of the Orient.

3. For Christians who are neglecting prayer
Jas 4:2 Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain:
ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not.
Luke 11:9-13 9 And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek,
and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. 10 For every one
that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that
knocketh it shall be opened. 11 If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is
a father, will he give him a stone? or if he ask a fish, will he for a fish give
him a serpent? 12 Or if he shall ask an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? 13
If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how
much more shall your heavenlyFather give the Holy Spirit to them that ask
him?
Jas 5:13-18 13 Is any among you afflicted? let him pray. Is any merry? let
him sing psalms. 14 Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the
church; and let them pray over him, anointinghim with oil in the name of

with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? 16 And
what agreementhath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple
of the livingGod; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in
them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 17
Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord,
and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, 18 And will be a
Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord
Almighty. 7:1 Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us
cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting
holiness in the fear of God.
Matt 6:24 No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one,
and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other.
Ye cannot serve God and mammon.
1John 2:15-17 15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the

Luke 8:14 And that which fell among thorns are they, which, when they
have heard, go forth, and are choked with cares and riches and pleasures
of this life, and bring no fruit to perfection.

Matt 24:44-51 44 Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye

Dan 12:3 And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the
firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever

Rev 22:12 And, behold, I come quickly; and my rewardis with me, to give
every man accordingas his work shall be.
6. For Christians who are undergoingtemptation
Jas 1:2-4 2 My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers
temptations; 3 Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.
4 But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire,
wantingnothing.
Jas 1:12 Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried,
he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them
that love him.
1Pet 5:8-11 8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversarythe devil, as a
roaringlion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: 9 Whom resist
stedfast in the faith, knowingthat the same afflictions are accomplishedin
your brethren that are in the world. 10 But the God of all grace, who hath
calledus unto his eternal glory by ChristJesus, after that ye have suffereda

shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against
you falsely, for my sake. 12 Rejoice, and be exceedingglad: for great is
your rewardin heaven: for so persecutedthey the prophets which were
before you.
1Pet 4:12-14 12 Beloved, think it not strange concerningthe fiery trial
which is to try you, as though some strange thing happenedunto you: 13
But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ's sufferings; that, when
his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceedingjoy. 14 If ye
be reproachedfor the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory

and of God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your
part he is glorified.

8. For Christians who are undergoingtrial

loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth. 7 If
ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is
he whom the father chasteneth not?
Heb 12:11 Now no chasteningfor the present seemeth to be joyous, but
grievous: nevertheless afterwardit yieldeth the peaceable fruitof
righteousness unto them which are exercisedthereby.
1Pet 1:4-7 4 To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that
fadeth not away, reservedin heaven for you, 5 Who are kept by the power
of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealedin the last time. 6

Ps 27:13-14 13 I had fainted, unless I had believed to see the goodness of

9. For Christians who have lost loved ones
John 14:1-3 1 Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe
also in me. 2 In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I
would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and
prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that
where I am, there ye may be also.
John 14:27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the
world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heartbe troubled, neither let it
be afraid.
John 13:7 Jesus answeredand said unto him, What I do thou knowest not
now; but thou shalt know hereafter.
Ps 46:10 Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exaltedamong the
heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.
Rev 14:13 And I hearda voice from heaven saying unto me, Write, Blessed
are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit,
that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them.
2Sam 12:22-23 22 And he said, While the childwas yet alive, I fasted and
wept: for I said, Who can tell whether GOD will be gracious to me, that the

him back again? I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me.

caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air:
and so shall we ever be with the Lord. 18 Wherefore comfortone another
with these words.

are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord: 7 (For we walk by
faith, not by sight:) 8 We are confident, I say, and willingrather to be
absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.
Phil 1:23 For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to
be with Christ; which is far better:
1Cor 15:42-44 42 So also is the resurrectionof the dead. It is sown in
