Emphasize the important ways that all members of the ASU community are an integral part of these aspirations. See slide notes for examples of projects and research happening at ASU that touches on these aspirations.
• #5: ASU’s Campus Harvest program gathers edible vegetation grown on campus, such as Seville oranges, Medjool dates, and select herbs and produce to be served in university dining facilities. Sustainability initiatives at ASU are known for their bold vision that spans all university functions--research, curriculum, outreach and engagement programs, and operational efforts.
• #6: The Stardust Center for Affordable Homes and the Family empowers families and achieves economic and social sustainability by providing educational opportunities like outreach events, university-level courses, and community resources that inform and promote sustainable, affordable housing.
• #7: Student startup FlashFood, part of ASU’s Edson Student Entrepreneur Initiative, created a mobile app that fights hunger and reduces food waste by connecting restaurants, caterers and others with perishable food to community organizations that serve the hungry.
• #8: Researchers at the AZ Center for Algae Technology and Innovation (AzCATI) are working to make renewable algae into a cost-effective biofuel.
• #9: The Future Sun Devil Families program engages 9th grade students and their families in series of workshops which prepare Arizona students for success at ASU. Participating students and families attend monthly workshops at their own high school or a nearby partnering high school.
• #10: The Center for Science and the Imagination works across traditional disciplinary boundaries to foster creative, ambitious thinking about the future.
• #11: Established in 2003, one of the first intiatives of the ASU/Mayo Clinic partnership was the development of the ASU College of Nursing and Health Innovation -Mayo Clinic Campus program, allowing cohorts of 20-30 senior nursing students to complete their clinical training on the Mayo campus instructed by Mayo Clinic nursing faculty. Additional programs have materialized in the form of a joint Seed Grant Program, a host of dual degree opportunities, cutting-edge research collaborations and other expansive, shared projects.

The way you attend class will be different The way you participate will be different The way you interact with your instructors will be different The way you interact with your peers will be different The key to success is making use of the people and resources around you to adapt. Think of the successful people you know. They may have had independent ideas that they cultivated for success, but I bet they were interdependent of the people around them, their environment, and made use of all the resources available to them: they “Leveraged their place” or situation and got ahead in their careers and lives. You can too! It’s also likely that the way you find work after graduation will be different than you think. • #17: Advisor- You have a map to follow to assure you are taking the proper courses to maintain a four year graduation in the academic areas you’re considering. Explorers have up to 45 credit hours of time to make their decision, but most choose in the first two semesters. Within the major map you will notice the UNI courses, and general studies Our goal is to keep students on a four year track- require to declare after 45 credits. But note that certain programs, such as design, music, art (Herberger programs) are usually a four year degree once you declare the program.
