Without order in the public realm the world we live in would be a very unorganized environment.
When it comes to order within the public realm we have to thank planning, zoning, transects, and
urbanism theories, because these strategies shape our environment as to what it is today. Authors such
as Leon Krier, Emily Talen, Cliff Ellis, and Douglas Kelbaugh are theorist who have discussed
problems with urban design and provide implications on how to make the public realm a better place.
With these thoughts on how to better the public realm, cities could become something greater and
more cohesive in design that what they currently are today. By simply improving one thing in order to
create a good urban framework, we should consider the words of these authors. In this paper I will
explain and address there theories of the public realm by, examining planning and zoning, the transect,
and the three urbanism theories, and how they are framework to shaping order in the urban
environment.
In order for space within the public realm to have good urban design, zoning is a major part of
organization of a city master plan. Planning should also be considered on a smaller scale such as city

Twin Cities, Twin Races Reading the book, The Other Side of the River, by Alex Kotlowitz, the author
writes about the relationship between two towns in Michigan, and the death of a young boy named
Eric McGinnis. The two towns, Benton Harbor and St. Joseph, are called the Twin Cities , but are
ironically not related in any way. St. Joseph is 95 percent white, while Benton Harbor is impoverished
and is 92 percent black. Throughout the book Kotlowitz questions the residents from both towns and
how they are affected by the environment around them. The author also starts with the climax on the
first page of the book the death of Eric, and uses this as an technique to tell the story of the
disagreements between the two towns. With the murder of Eric, Kotlowitz identifies the climax at the
beginning of the book and how it has been affecting the two towns which are physically only two and
a half miles apart, and the river that flows between them only being a quarter of a mile wide. St.

Modern biographies are often looked at by others as a reputable source of information when it comes
to their subject of interest being hundreds of years old. Maybe it is because people today tend to
believe whatever they are told or perhaps they see the title Dr. or professor pop up on the screen and
put all of their trust in whatever that person is saying. However, that s exactly the problem, whoever is
holding the title of Dr. or professor is as equal a person like you or me, and sometimes we forget to
hold them susceptible to error. With that said, when analyzing and evaluating the modern biographies
of El Cid one has to remember that whoever is stating these facts has only ever studied or read the
same information myself and a regular Joe Schmo could have read and studied. They are not privy to
any information that can be proven true by Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar himself, as they cannot time travel
back to medieval times and ask him to answer all of their questions. Because the people who created

From the trail s official terminus, the ridge flattened out before rising sharply. This repeated several
times, each time stretching higher and steeper, before finally flattening out a thousand feet above our
