Do you know
where chess
originated?
 Chess is a game originated in India in the 15th
century.
 A game reserved only for kings and members
of the upper classes.
 The modern design of chess pieces bears the
name Staunton, these are the type of pieces that
are now used in all tournaments worldwide.
 Stauton was an English master in the mid-1800s.
 The first International chess tournament was the
London Tourney played in 1851.
 A German named Adolf Anderssen won the game
and became the unofficial best chess player of the
world .
 A first great American-born chess player is Paul
Morphy in 1850s where he beat all the challengers.
 The first official championship chess
tournament was played in 1866 in London, with
sand clocks to restrict the length of a game.
 Bohemian (Czechoslovakin) Jew named Steinitz
won the game and became the world’s first official
chess champion, holding this title until 1894.
 Nowadays, Russia dominates the game chess.
PAWN
One of the chessmen of least value
having the power to move only forward
ordinarily one square at the a time, to
capture only diagonally forward, and to be
promoted to any piece except a king upon
reaching the eight rank.
ROOK
Either of two pieces of each color
in a set of chessmen having the power
to move along the ranks or files across
any number of unoccupied squares, it
is also called castle.
 HORSE
Either of two pieces of each color
in a set of chessmen having the power
to make an L-shaped move of two
squares in one row and one square in a
perpendicular row over squares that may
be occupied.
BASESHOP
Either of two pieces of each
color in a set of chessmen having
the power to move diagonally across
any number of adjoining
unoccupied squares.
 KING
The principal piece of each color
in chess having the power to move
ordinarily one square in any direction
