How to get it done
detailed instructions on how to get these looks
* If any of the following instructions are beyond your skill level, we recommend
checking out the YouTube tutorials listed at the end of this presentation
PIE CHARTS
To get this look, create a circle and an arch from your
shapes toolbar. It is very important that they are the same
size. These have no fill & a line width of 15. To adjust the
amount of arc that is showing (to indicate different
percentages), click on the yellow adjuster and drag to the
desired location

Pro tip: be sure to select the
circle and arc, and use the
”center align” and the “middle
align” to make sure they line
up perfectly.
Select the chart and click on the actual section of
the pie to change the fill and outline colors.
Transparent outline was used for this chart
PIE CHARTS
To get the separated and un-even look of this chart, insert the chart, remove the lines around each
section of the pie by changing them to transparent like we did on the last page, then click off the chart
and back on it directly so that all sections are selected (image 1). Click and hold on a section of the chart
as you drag it outward (away from the rest of the pie slices). This causes a space to form between all the

spaces. You may have to try this a couple of times
to get the desired look.
For the chart-key manually add rounded
rectangles from your shapes menu and use the
yellow adjuster to increase the curve

box

To get these looks, layering is important. Bring elements
forward and backward as needed.

There are two ways to change the shape of the columns in
graphs.
1. Auto-replace all columns with the same shape
This option is faster, but (IMHO) doesn’t have as nice of an end
result b/c the image that is used is stretched for the longer
columns. Here are the steps:
With the basic chart created, from the Insert tab of the Ribbon in
Excel, click Shapes, choose the arrow you would like to use on
your chart, and click and drag anywhere on the worksheet to
draw the rounded rectangle (or whatever shape you’re using ie.
arrows). Next, Copy the shape. Then click on any of the columns
in the chart and execute a Paste command. Upon executing the
Paste command, Excel immediately replaces each of the columns
with the shape
2. Manually replace columns
For this, I created a chart, then inserted rounded rectangles into
the slide, placed a rectangle over-top each column in the chart to
get the correct length, and finally, deleted the columns behind.
This option obviously takes longer, but creates a cleaner look.
For either option, highlight important numbers by using a
different fill color for those columns

Start with a “chord” shape (be sure the shape is
‘square’ (height & width are the same), use yellow
adjusters to make desired ”fullness” and rotate so
that the filled area appears that it’s sitting at the
bottom of your shape
Icon + Chart options
Maps
Although the tendency with maps is to fill in
the area effected/indicated (state or country),
this can lead to mis-interpreting the data. Ie.
In this example Texas is included, but does
not have as much of an impact as Illinois. If
the sates were just filled in as a different color,
Texas appears larger and therefore, more
important.
Adding shapes of different sizes to denote the
impact or level of what you’re indicating is a
great way to avoid this type of confusion.

“bubble” charts are a sub-option of XY
(scatter) charts in your main chart
options. Add some transparency to the
bubbles to create a light look
Contrasting numbers of icons can
show differences in stats
This “Parts of a

created using
individual rectangles.
Be sure to align
everything carefully.
