What is a debit card? A debit card is a card that is used just like money When the card is swiped money is automatically withdrawn from your bank account It looks just like a credit card but says debit on the front instead of credit Unlike a credit card, you can only charge up to the amount you have in your account Quit

Steps on Purchasing something with a Debit Card 1.) Hand the clerk your debit card 2.) The card will be swiped 3.) Enter your PIN number into the pad or station 4.) The cashier will get approval from the bank or it will say the card is declined 5.) If it is approved a receipt will print and your funds will be deducted from your account 1.) Step 1 Hand the clerk your debit card Make sure you tell them it is a debit card They may ask for your ID Have your ID ready ahead of time to save having to search for it They may ask to see your ID to make sure your picture and name match the one on your card This is to make sure the card hasn’t been stolen Quit

Step 2 The clerk will swipe your debit card The card may take a minute or two to respond While the card is processing be sure to be patient by standing still and being quiet Quit

Step 3 The clerk will ask you to enter your PIN number A PIN number is a four digit personal identification number that is tied to your debit card so no one else can use it The four digit number should be kept on a small piece of paper in your wallet, purse, or some place where you have it easily available so you don’t forget it Quit

Step 3 Continued You will punch your PIN number into a the pad or station in front of you When you put your PIN number in, you will not be able to see the numbers for security purposes After, you type your number into the station you will press enter It will show the amount being charged to your card It will ask you if it is correct and ok to process, you will press yes or no (it will only process if you say yes) Quit

Step 4 Once you have said yes or no to your card being charged, the card will be processed The cashier will let you know if the card it approved or declined If the card is declined, you should call your bank Quit

Step 5 If the card is approved, then the cashier will hand you your receipt You should keep the receipt somewhere safe for your records This is to ensure that the proper amount is charged to your card Quit
