Target Audience
Elle is a high end Fashion magazine, along with other
popular high end fashion magazines such as Vogue.
This cover of Rihanna was released in 2013 and was
a major cover. Rihanna has millions of female and
male fans all over the world. However Elle is aimed
at a female target audience, likely to be aged from 18
to 30. Interested in high end fashion, and most likely
to study new trends in fashion. We can tell as an
audience that this fashion magazine is aimed at an
older target audience, one example for this is the
pricing of the magazine which is £4, the same price as
Vogue; Elle’ competing magazine. The social status of
Elle target audience would be upper middle class,
and some lower working class. Elle is a magazine a
fashion student at college or university may read.
This particular front cover isn’t as ‘full’ as a usual
Elle magazine cover would be. This is because
Rihanna is an A list celebrity that is recognised by
millions of people, so she is simply selling this
magazine just by being on the front cover. There is
minimum text, so all of the attention from the
audience is on Rihanna herself.
Text
The text on Elle’ front cover suits the audience, as it’s
formal, sophisticated and bold just like it’s audience.
Elle’ title is in a tall, bold font in a dark colour which
is the same as Rihanna’s dress. The title at the top of
the magazine cover in the primary optical area
certainly grabs the audience’s attention first. It’s in
capitals which suggest the text is important and
dominant. There is a piece of text on the left which
quotes Rihanna ‘I will have a child’ which will
obviously create questions from the audience which
will persuade them to read the magazine further. It is
also in a different style of font which is quite chunky
and fun looking. A tagline is positioned on Rihanna’s
arm above her tattoo which states ‘see it – love it –
shop it – share it’ which is enticing the audience to
buy the magazine and suggesting to share it with
maybe their friends and family, or even other
Rihanna fans. This piece of text is in the same font as
the previous quote, mainly to catch the audience’s
eye. There are different letters around this front
cover of Elle which are in bold, and larger than other
letters and words. This is to make the audience look
in all possible areas of the magazine cover. There is
minimum text as the main attraction is Rihanna
herself.
Colours
The colours on this Elle magazine front cover are
all darker, vibrant colours which create a
running theme throughout each page of Elle’
spread on Rihanna. These colours are teal blue,
red and black, all these colours are very deep and
attractive. The Elle headline is in a deep teal
blue colour which is purposely the same colour as
Rihanna’s dress and her eyes. As this colour is so
dark it is very dominant on the magazine cover
and grabs the audiences attention immediately.
The text below the headline is mainly black
which is plain, so the attention from the
audience isn’t taken away from the picture of
Rihanna. Rihanna’s lips are bright red, which
contrasts the other darker colours used.
Rihanna’s lips are the same colour as the text
‘Rihanna’ we say on the left hand side of the
front cover. Rihanna’s name is in a bright, red
colour as it’s her name, and an important piece of
information for the audience. The background
colour is a pink, off white which creates a
glowing style on the magazine cover, and also
suits the April spring issue theme. As it’s a
lighter, pastel colour which connotes the
beginning of spring.
Design & Layout
The Guttenberg Design Principle
The Primary
Optical Area:
In this area the
magazine title begins
and is presented in a
bold, large dark blue
coloured text. Which
captures the
audiences attention
first. Rihanna is in-
between the magazine
title. As she is the
main focus of the
cover on a whole.
The Strong
Fallow Area:
In this area the
last two letters of
the magazine
name is presented
in the same font
and colour as the
primary optical
area. Slightly
capturing
Rihanna's head
which separates
the word.
The Weak Fallow
Area:
In this area it is quite
empty as it’s not an
area the audience
will focus on or take
much time to look at.
We just see the edge
of Rihanna's dress.
The Terminal
Area:
In this area we
see Rihanna’s
body, and text
which appeals
to the audience
significantly.
Naturally the readers focus
first on the Primary Optical
Area, and horizontally
downwards to the Terminal
Area. This is called Reading
Gravity.
Genre Codes & Conventions
The style of the magazine is very sophisticated, and
elegant. We recognise this as the magazine cover is very
simple, and not over done with text and pictures. The
cover provides the information the audience need, such
as magazine name, who the magazine is focusing on in
this issue and also a tag line and a quote from the
exclusive interview with Rihanna. This style is very
conventional in high end fashion magazines. The front
cover will always be very appealing on the eye, and very
themed. The language is formal, no slang is included as
again this is for an older female audience. The audience
is immediately drawn to the magazine once they have
seen Rihanna, and what magazine it is. The colours are
also appealing to a female as they are very basic colours
no bright extravagant colours that would not suit the
style. This is use of anchorage as it anchors the audience
into the magazine. Rihanna is also wearing a very loose,
spring dress which also intrigues the female audience as
this audience will be highly interested in fashion. Her
make up is flawless and we can see her tattoos which are
displayed on her neck and under her breast. This all
anchors the female audience. A high end fashion
magazine will always have an A List celebrity on there
front cover, as it automatically makes the magazine sell
as the audience love seeing them!
