Finland in Facts Name: Suomi / Finland Population: 5.3 million Area: 338 145 m² Independent since 1917 Government: semi-presidential republic Member of the EU since 1995
Finland in Facts, cont’d Religion: Christianity  (mainly Lutheran and Orthodox) Official languages: Finnish and Swedish  (Sami a recognised regional language)
Swedish Speaking Finns ca. 5,46% of Finland’s population 19 solely Swedish speaking communities  mainly in the coastal regions but also in other areas bilingual public service  right to services in Swedish representation in the Parliament (RKP) Svenska dagen  celebrated on March 6
Multiethnic Finland 132 708 foreign nationals living in Finland  172 928 people with mothertongue other than Finnish, Swedish or Sami largest minority language groups: Russian, Estonian, English and Somali

Åland Islands – ”Ahvenanmaa” autonomous island province ca. 27 153 inhabitants Swedish the only official language demilitarized zone right of domicile prerequisit for voting, owning property and trade
Finns and Religion several ”sects” within Lutheran church secular and tolerant state church religion taught in schools freedom of religion can be discussed but with is seen as personal
Finns and Politics generally dispassionate about politics political involvement mainly issue oriented party membership rare generally open but convictions considered personal
Finns and Time 24 hour system punctuality important Finns aren’t the most flexible of nations deadlines must be followed being late considered very disrespectful and rude
Finns and Work everyone responsible for their own performance interaction with colleagues important but usually only during working hours atmosphere usually casual but don’t be fooled into thinking hierarchies don’t exist!
Finns and Foreigners attitudes vary stance usually reserved  young people mostly open and curious ” not in my backyard” rural areas more prejudiced updated discrimination act in force since 1.12.2008
