You’ve seemingly applied for dozens, maybe scores,
perhaps even hundred of jobs.
And you finally got an interview.
And you think you knocked it out of the park.
The day you’ve been waiting for has arrived. You receive
an email from the recruiter. It goes something like this:
Dear Candidate:
Thank you for your interest in the position. We received a number of
resumes from highly qualified candidates. Unfortunately, we will be
unable to move ahead with an offer at this time.
We will keep your resume on file for a year and we encourage to you
apply for other positions that may interest you.
Best of luck in your future endeavors.
Sincerely,
The Recruiting Team
Messages like that go out to job seekers tens of thousands
of time each day. It’s not fun to read those words, but
make sure you don’t take it personally.
You don’t have to reply to such a message.
If you choose to reply, always be sure to remain positive
and professional.
It’s a terrible idea to send a message with any or all of the
following sentiments:
 “You’ll be sorry!”
 “I was looking at the LinkedIn profile of Sarah on your
team. I’m much more qualified than she is to do this
work!”
What possible good can come from appearing to put a
curse (or perhaps appearing to threaten) the recruiter or
hiring manager?
A message like this comes across as petty and bitter.
This comment seems like your denigrating the very people
who you’d want to work with. Again, it comes across as
bitter and petty.
And if there was even a shred of truth to the line from the
rejection email about keeping your resume on file…
sending an angry message about how you’re more
qualified than current team members will guarantee a red
flag will be put on your filed resume.
And even if you do send such a message, then at least be
sure that you don’t actually send Sarah a LinkedIn
invitation afterwards.
Even as the economy picks up, landing your dream job is
still difficult. Don’t be your own worst enemy by sending an
inappropriately emotional email. You never know when you
might run in to that recruiter again!
