This document discusses the classification of matter. It defines elements, compounds, and mixtures.
- An element is a single type of matter that cannot be broken down further by chemical methods. There are 118 known elements, with some made naturally and others made artificially.
- Compounds are formed when two or more elements chemically bond together to form a new substance with different properties. Compounds consist of molecules containing two or more types of atoms.
- Mixtures contain two or more substances that are not chemically combined. Mixtures can be either homogeneous, with a uniform composition throughout, or heterogeneous, with visibly distinct parts.
