PR Practicum Top Ten By: Sarah Wilson S
1. Job Interviewing A job interview gives you a chance to prove yourself. I learned about various types of interviews, how to prepare for an interview, how to succeed on an interview, and how to follow up after one.
2. Resume Writing The primary goal of a resume is to get an interview. I learned that my resume should basically be like an ad in a magazine that promotes myself. A resume should also be updated and edited to fit the job description of where you apply.
3. Using LinkedIn It is a perfect tool and network to make business connections and build a name for yourself professionally in the virtual world.
4. Searching for a Job Searching for a job can be difficult fresh out of college. We are now competing with people who have more experience than us. Which is why one should never only apply to one job and hope on that one to follow through. Apply to as many as possible.
5. Creating and Sharing My Portfolio After creating my portfolio, I learned that I need to get some more “real” pieces for my book. Almost everything I have in it now is from school projects. Having real experience will build my portfolio which will make me be a great candidate for hire.
6. Tips I learned from my information interview I learned that PR is not just a 9 to 5 job. PR is an around the clock job, especially if one is going into event planning. Also, I learned that building a great network in the area where you want to practice is a MUST in order to be successful.
7. What I learned from my book I read the book titled, Crowd Surfing: Surviving and thriving in the age of consumer empowerment. This book is a great read. It tells you what to do with the new consumer (who has become empowered due to social media and blogs) rather than how the consumers today have changed.
8. Expect the Unexpected I learned to always expect the unexpected during an interview or presentation. ALWAYS be prepared with backup or another plan.
9. Presenting to the class I learned that a presenter must ALWAYS be prepared, not matter what happens. The presenter should also have full control over the audiences’ attention.
10. Dress for the part It is important to dress for success when entering a job interview. I always knew to dress for the part of the job where one applies, but I never knew that one must think about so many different things (i.e. no perfume or strong scented lotion, breath mints NOT gum, only bring in car keys, no purse, etc…) IT MAKES SENSE THOUGH!
