This document provides information on literacy development for emergent and beginning readers from PreK-3. It discusses the five pillars of literacy, cognitive and noncognitive factors, foundational skills, strategies for selecting text, and strategies for lesson planning. Sample lesson plans are provided for both emergent and beginning literacy learners that incorporate shared reading, picture walks, writing activities, and developing comprehension. The importance of print-rich environments that include labels, displays of vocabulary and the alphabet, and reading centers is also emphasized.
