  • 1. Pre-production (screen 6).<br />Casting Director; Responsible to short list the actors into roles that are needed in the script.
  • 2. The Editor; Responsible to choose the people that will be used once the film is in post production. During the process, the editor will work with the director to ensure that the transitions portrayed in the shooting script.
  • 3. The Head of Sound; in pre-production they are responsible for hiring the team of sound recordists and boom operators. Also, they will discuss the design of the film with the director and the producer.
  • 4. Director of Photography; They plan the stage of film making, they work with the production designer and the director to make sure that everyone is happy and understands about what style of film to shoot.
  • 5. The Production Designer; They are very busy in the pre-production of the film, they hire the entire team to ensure all sets, props etc are designed and that the construction department builds them to specification.
  • 6. The line producer; they are responsible for managing every person and issue throughout the film.Casting: <br />The cast; these people make up the film, on average a film will have 30 cast members, the casting director have to pick the correct people for the role to ensure a successful film.
  • 7. Casting director; they identify the potential cast members by looking at past experience but also placing adverts and poster to advertise the possible positions available. Most of the cast will have to audition to get through to the film. Storyboard:<br />The director; and often the editor will need a storyboard artist and sketchers to design the storyboard to do a paper edit. It’s much cheaper to do this than shoot or in post production.
  • 8. Storyboard artist; they will be employed to design each frame to exactly how the shot will be ultimately filmed. They have to be able to do quick sketches also including motion and camera moves. They also need to understand the storyline and film making techniques so they will be able to advise the director on shot to use.
  • 9. Director of Photography; they will be present at this stage as well as they need to recognize the directors requirements for each shot. They usually have more experience in films compared to the director as they move from films quickly, so they are good at giving advice. After all the shots are agreed, they can look at each shot in more detail. Production Design; <br />Production designer; they work with the set designer and construction team to produce artificial sets for the film, these sets have to suit the locations of the film based on the storyboard. They manage a set of team of around 100 people from set builders, riggers etc.
  • 10. Art director; and the art department take on designs from the production designer to create each and every set for the film. They are responsible to decorate each set, the objects such as props.
  • 11. Location manager; some of the production will take place off the set, so the LM and his assistants will have to scout around to find the correct locations that fit in with the sets and storyboard. They are in charge of authorities and property owners to get the required permits and warrants to secure the location.
  • 12. Construction manager; they oversee all the film sets based on the storyboard and models, they have to decide the fine line between making the sets look realistic and keeping the cost of construction efficient. They are responsible to manage the set of team with the production designer.
  • 13. Costume Designer; they will work with the director to decide what costumes and looks to give the cast to fit in with the overall look of the film. She will have to hire a team who are in charge of altering and sourcing, or producing the clothes. Special effects planning:<br />Special effects; many shots are achieved through using special effects; each shot is designed so it looks realistic on the screen. The physical effects done are prepared much earlier on to help prepare more, effects shot are planned more in detail and the normal shots to obtain good quality.
  • 14. Visual effects supervisor; they are in charge of planning and designing which is going to be used in the film. They will discuss with the director and production designer what effects to include, and how they can be achieved successfully. He must have a good understanding of techniques available with the budget that is given.
  • 15. Special physical effects; certain shots are best shot using physical effects, therefore models, animatronics, pyrotechnics and other techniques are used to capture live footage which can be edited. The SPE build everything which is needed for the shoot, it could take the technicians months to prepare to ensure all the effects are securely captured. Production unit; <br />Production accountant; they are in charge of the films finance. All the funding available is paid into one central account. The PA is responsible for managing all the money of this production company; he must produce regular reports to the producer, line producer, financiers and completion bond insurers.
  • 16. Production manager; they are the producer’s executive officer, they are responsible for dealing with day-to-day money issues, they must ensure they balance and supervise all the administrative and technical aspects of the production, budgeting and scheduling and managing the activities of the entire crew.
  • 17. Line producer; they deal with the producer and the financiers, they must write a schedule out, arrange contracts for equipment hire, insurance etc.
  • 18. The 1st assistant director; the AD deals with the crew to make sure everything is on schedule, to assist on hiring all the rest of the staff, together with the 2nd and 3rd Ads and runners, they will have to work out and plan shot plans for each day, determine the equipment required.
