preliminary task evaluation by alessia mezzela
I learnt how to use interesting shots
and edits such as MATCH ON
ACTION effectively and
successfully which, as a group, then
used them in the opening
sequence when we dropped the confetti to the floor.

In comparison, the opening
sequence is much better
than the preliminary task
due to the fluidity of shots.
Also, we had adjusted
costume and setting to fit
perfectly with ideas and the
horror genre in order for
the product to become
successful.
The match on action was difficult at first as we had
to time it together to be able to achieve fluid shots.

To build suspense we learned
how to add certain sounds like
a gentle boom which is
hyperbolic for effect.
We leant how to use Premier Pro in order to put sequence
together of all of our own interesting shots such as point of
view and a high angled shot . We also learnt how to change to
speed/pace and timings of each shot or scene, for example the
slow motion effect put on the confetti movement. We used
editing skills to be able to either create an anti climax or build
up tension in order for the audience to be left sitting on the
edges of their seats.
We also learnt how to incorporate titles from secondary resources
such as dafont.com which we then searched for specific titles to
accompany the shots and suit the main plot and genre ideas and
convention. We had to change these titles a few times due to the
font looking too western or not horror-like enough…
The first shot reverse shot
in the preliminary task was
ineffective and
unsuccessful due to both
dialogue and the height of
the camera.

For example, when the group member Aimee
was speaking to the other group member
Scott, the camera was at too much of a low
angle, and therefore did not match Scott’s
height when he was sitting in the chair. Also,
this was a struggle as the camera and character
was too much into the corner.

Moreover, we used an over the shoulder shot in both sequences, and as an overall view, we can see the
change. In the preliminary task, the over the shoulder shot enabled the audience to see the location for
example, the one over Scott’s shoulder. However, the shot over Aimee’s shoulder was not high enough to be
able to see enough of Scott when he sits down (within the screen).
In the final opening sequence, ‘AFFLICTION’, we also used an over the shoulder shot when the camera is
positioned over the main characters shoulder when she reaches for the door, the lighting of the door knob could
have been improved o the audience were able to notice the blood on the top, meaning the tension could have
been built up even more.
