USES
 Actions that are happening at or around the
moment of speaking.
 At this moment we are having a very interesting English
class.
 Some students are sleeping in the class.
 We use present continuous for temporary
situations (even if the situation is not taking
place at this moment)
 We are reading a very interesting book.
 I am staying with my grandparents for a week.
 Present continuous is used for future
arrangements, that is when you are sure
that it will happen in the future.
 Next weekend we are playing a football match in the
school.
 I am meeting my friends at 6 p.m.
FORM
Affirmative Negative Questions
I am studying. am not
studying.
Am I studying?
He / She / It is studying. Isn’t studying. Is she studying?
We / You / They are studying. aren’t studying. Are they
studying?
Two parts: the verb “to be” and the ing form of the main verb.
TIME EXPRESSIONS
 NOW, RIGHT NOW, NOWADAYS, AT THIS MOMENT
 We are learning English right now.
 I am not working at this moment.
 I am having very good marks this term.
SPELLING RULES
BASIC RULE – We just add “ing” Drink - Drinking
Verbs ending in “y” – We keep it. Study – Studying; Play - Playing
Verbs ending in “e” – “e” falls Come – coming; Dance - dancing
Verbs with consonant- vowel –
consonat – We double the final
consonant.
Run – running
Cut - Cutting
Verb ending in “ie” – “ie” becomes
“y” and we add ing.
Die – dying
Lie - lying
Two syllables verbs - If the second
syllable is stressed, we double the
final consonant.
Travel – travelling
Begin - beginning
