SIMPLE to talk about
permanent situations.

C.- There are some verbs which do not use in the Continuous form:
For example: belong, cost, hate, have(= possess), know, like, love, own,
remember, hear, smell, understand, want.
We say:
I want an ice- cream. ( Not: I am wanting.)
He knows the queen.( Not: He is knowing.)
This car belongs to Tom. ( Not: This car is
belonging.)
That jacket costs £84. ( Not: This jacket is
costing.)
We call these verbs state verbs – they describe emotional and
mental states ( e.g. like, hate, know), use of the senses ( e.g. hear,
smell) or possession ( e.g. own, belong).
1. What do you do? means What is your job?
Possible answers I’m a teacher. or I work in an office.
2. What are you doing? means What are you doing at this moment?
or What are you doing these days?
Possible answers I’m doing my homework. or I’m studying French.
3. How do you go to school? means How do you go to school every day?
Possible answers I usually go by bus. or I always walk to school.
4. How are you going to school? means How are you going to school today?
Possible answers I’m going by bus today. or I’m walking today.
