- 3. UterusLabor and Delivery Labor is the process of expelling the fetus from the uterus and through the vagina.
- 4. The labor process consists of 3 stages:
- 5. Dilation stage – 1st stage
- 6. Expulsion stage – 2nd stage
- 7. Placental stage – 3rd stageDilation StageThe uterine contracts strongly to expel the fetus.
- 8. The fetus presses on the cervix and causes it to dilate or expand.
- 9. At the end of this stage the cervix is dilated to 10 centimeters.
- 10. It is the longest stage.
- 11. It is divided into two phases – early labor and active labor.
- 12. Expulsion StageThe baby enters the birth canal.
- 13. In this stage you get the urge to push.
- 14. In this stage the baby is born.Placental StageThe uterus continues to contract.
- 15. The uterus expels the placenta through the vagina.
- 16. The placenta is usually delivered 5 – 10 minutes after the baby is born.
- 17. Gynecologist A physician that specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of conditions of the female reproductive system.
- 18. The word gynecology comes from the Greek word “gynaika”- means woman.
- 19. Most gynecologist are also obstetricians– physicians who specialize in treatment ofwomen during pregnancy and childbirth.Uterus Hollow, pear shaped organ that contains a thick muscular wall, a mucous membrane and rich supply of blood.

- 22. Fundus – upper portion, between where fallopian tubes connect to the uterus.
- 23. Corpus – the central portion.
