ASSESSMENT 
INSTRUMENTS

In this chapter, we discuss a criterion-referenced assessment, an 
instrument composed of items or tasks that directly measure skills 
describes in objectives. 
Criterion-referenced tests is a objectives-referenced tests that the 
instructor done to ensure the learners understand what they study. 
There are 4 types of tests: 
 Entry-skills tests 
 Pretests 
 Practice tests 
 Posttests
ENTRY-SKILLS TEST 
Usually given to the students before the 
instruction begin to assess learners’ mastery 
about the previous lesson that they have 
learnt before. 
It may be found that learners who lack with 
this skills will have a problem during the 
instruction.
PRETESTS 
Administered to the learners before the 
instruction for the sake of efficiency. 
Whether the learners have mastered the 
previous skills that have to be included in the 
instruction.
PRACTICE TESTS 
Usually during the instruction process. 
To provide active learners during the instruction 
Enable learners to rehearse new knowledge and skills 
Judge their level of understanding and skill 
Contain fewer skills rather than pretest/posttest and typically 
focused on the lesson rather than the unit. 
Examples: 
Spot quiz 
Short essay
POSTTESTS 
This test should assess all the objectives. 
May be quite long rather than pretest. 
To ensure that learners have achieved the 
terminal objective
