What parts can I use from NZ maths on my plan? You can use the Strategies from NZ maths in your learning intentions box in your plan. You can use the numeracy books or examples as a part of the learning reinforcement. The references part (in the NZ maths plan) is a list of resources for the teacher to help teach their lesson. Students can also use equipment independently after the lesson. NZ maths can give you examples to fill into the knowledge activity box in your planning. NZ maths can also provide your Gloss and Numpa assessment sheets.
Warm up time… Clear and purposeful warm up game. Should be based around the focus learning of the time-addition, subtraction, multiplication… Should be varied, punchy and fun. Short be aimed at all levels of ability-not too hard and not too easy. Should be varied-not the same games every week.
The Numeracy Books … These books are essential to the success of your numeracy programme. The books give you the WALT, stages, examples of word stories and equipment needed. Even after 2 years of being on the programme this book is always with me when teaching. When doing maths planning it would be useful to state the WALT from the numeracy book and the page number They provide a very clear guide to what to teach and even state questions you could ask students that relate to the number topic. The use of modelling book… This is an essential teaching and assessment tool in maths. This allows you to track students progress in knowledge and understanding in maths.
What should I be doing in the guided maths time? Use of Maths task board for each maths groups. Use of maths modelling book WALT clearly written as well as date and stage, in modelling book. Using various materials to help with number-cards, dice, counters, ice-cream sticks.
With the teacher… The Teacher uses the numeracy book to help pose questions in order to get students responses. All student responses to be recorded and teacher should be asking students to expand their thinking if necessary. Knowledge and strategy should be working together in partnership in a lesson.
The students who are not with you… Written work Students should be working on tasks that reinforces what has been taught with the teacher, work that you set prior to that lesson. Maths games Each syndicate have clear and fun maths games that are clearly state the stage. These games reinforce the number strategy that have been taught. You must go through the games and teach these prior to letting the children play them. There is also Bingo, adding up.
What should I be doing at the end of the lesson? There should be a clear warm down-This should be fun and purposeful. The games should reinforce number strategies, for example… Round the world (adding, subtracting, multiplication), number tag, 100 or bust. Reflection… A group can share what they have learnt, what they felt they enjoyed, what they found difficult, the activities they have done.
Assessment… IKAN- this is a quick assessment tool that allows you to quickly track where your children are at-When placing results into e-tap the numbers at the top are the stages and not the bank results.
