Editor's Notes

  • #2: Welcome to my Courthouse Athletic Club team. I’m on the General Manager at the club and on the left of the photo. We normally aren’t this scary looking, but for a fun fall event we brought our A team to the football field for some friendly competition. I have been in my role since October 1 st, 2010 and I have a lot to learn. There currently are about 35 employees that look up to me for my leadership. The following presentation will address techniques I will use to improve my leadership skills.
  • #3: In order for me to expand and grow my leadership skills I will focus on three areas – Receiving feedback on a regular basis, maintaining a balance of energy, expertise, and integrity, and coaching others. Working on these three areas will help me improve my leadership skills.
  • #4: Since I am new in my role, I believe it is very important to receive feedback from a variety of team members on a variety of different aspects. I plan on seeking feedback monthly for through the end of this year, then six months latter, and again on a yearly basis. The only way an individual or a team can improve is if people are able to speak up about issues, problems, and situations (Jenewein & Schmitz, 2007).
  • #5: According to Singh (2008), the away to establish strong leadership traits is to create a balance of integrity, expertise, and energy (p.733). I plan on using my energy to drive the team towards common goals and achieve our purpose of obtaining and retaining members. I must set higher goals and standards for myself than my team members (Singh, 2008). In order for my team to follow my lead I need to be consistent in my actions and make sure they match the company’s values (Singh, 2008). I don’t necessarily need to be the know it all or the go to person for every questions, but I need to be able to drive my team to seek personal growth and action (Signh, 2008) If I am able to blend these ingredients together, I should be able to achieve what I’m looking for – Strong Leadership.
  • #6: Here is the layout of my complete team. Above the General Manger, is the Operations director and the Owner. I am leading everyone who is below me in the pyramid. My plan is to not be seen as the person at the top, but on the same playing field. Where shared leadership roles allow others to coach and come along side and work with each other to reach the common goal (Katzenbach & Smith, 1993). As a team leader I am only as good as the sum of all our parts, if my team mates fail, I fail (Kateznbach & Smith, 1993). My plan is to set common goals, discuss and decided as team what we focus on and areas we don’t, coaching each other all the way.
  • #7: In order for me to expand and grow my leadership skills I will focus on three areas – Receiving feedback on a regular basis, maintaining a balance of energy, expertise, and integrity, and coaching others. Working on these three areas will help me improve my leadership skills.
  • #8: By constantly and continually focusing on, receiving feedback, creating a balance of integrity, energy, and expertise, and coaching others, I will be able to improve my leadership skills.
