To address drug shortages in Canada during the COVID-19 pandemic, the government plans to import medicines from six countries. While this could improve availability, importation also risks counterfeit or substandard drugs entering the supply chain. A literature review was conducted on the impacts of drug importation. Recommendations include carefully assessing benefits and challenges, ensuring drug quality and safety, and monitoring importation's effects. Importation may increase access and supply but challenges include quality control, regulatory issues, and impacts on domestic pharmaceutical firms.
