Still image analysis By Sharon Rebecca and Iman
SHOT: 1 We think it is a good close up shot and it is a good starting point to lead into telling the rest of the story. We choose to do this in our storyboarding so that the audience can see and understand the character and their emotion. However to develop this even further I think more emotion could have been conveyed through the use of more facial expression making it more clear that the person is sad and upset. In addition the position in the frame could have been planned better, as to create more of an impact, and show clearer emotion as well.
SHOT: 2 As a long shot I think it shows clearly the setting of the scene, it felt it was important in our planning that the audience to see the setting more fully, and gain more understanding of what the characters doing. To improve this image I think we could have changed the mise-on- scene so rather that the images being in colour they could have been in black and white, this would have created the element of mystery to the image and leaving the viewer wanting to know what happens next. Also we could have include more in the setting whether it was prop’s or changes in the setting, this could give the audience a better impression of the emotion and story we were trying to convey. However this also works as the emptiness of the image suggest loneliness and isolation.
SHOT: 3 We decided to continue a long shot to confirm to the audience the character’s walking. We feel this shot really worked well as it shows the character gradually getting closer to the door, This gives the viewers the idea that the character has an objective and gives purpose to images. To improve this image I feel that the whole door should have been in the image rather than just half. This would have looked more consistent with the previous images, and angled the camera further left than the last image rather than to the right.
SHOT: 4 This three quarter shot worked really well as it closes in on the characters’ body language and it becomes more clear that the character is worried and upset. As we started with close up’s to highlight emotion and moved out to setting we've returned back to the emotion and story now that the audience have seen the setting and purpose behind the images. However to improve this image I feel the picture could have been taken more from a front angle rather than the side. This would have portrayed more of the facial expression as well as body language.
SHOT: 5 This shot is similar to the one above but it comes in even closer yet again to improve this I feel it could have been taken from more of a front angle as in the previous shot.
SHOT: 6 I really like this shot as I feel it creates the sense of tension and suspense, the fact that there is an image of her hand on the door before she walks in emphasises the importance of the door in the scene, it could be that there is something on the other side of the door . . . To improve this image the characters’ hand could have been placed on the other side of the handle. Using the other hand could have improved the shot, and would have been a better position in frame. This would seem more natural and emphasise on the characters emotion state.
SHOT: 7 This is a good medium long shot as it shows the character entering the room, the areas to work on to develop this image would be the camera angle, if we had taken the shot from a front angle we could have seen the facial expression of the character as they entered the room, In addition the lighting is very dark and the characters’ cardigan blends in with the background. It also could be improved by arranging the character better in the frame, although her position in the frame is centre we feel it would have had a better impact if the characters stance was facing more forward.
SHOT: 8 Having the doors to end the scene makes the viewers wonder what is going on behind the doors, we attempted to also suggest feeling of isolation, with shutting the door for the end shot. After reviewing the shot we feel it could have been taken from a straighter front view.
