MOTIVATION
Motivation is the process that initiates, guides, and
maintains goal-oriented behaviours. It is what
drives us to take action and pursue our objectives.
IMPORTANCE OF MOTIVATION
■ Motivation is important because it acts as the driving force
behind our actions and decisions. It helps us set and
achieve goals, whether in academics, career, or personal
life. When we are motivated, we are more likely to persist
through challenges, maintain focus, and ultimately reach
our desired outcomes. Additionally, motivation contributes
to overall well-being and satisfaction, as it often leads to a
sense of accomplishment and purpose.
THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF
MOTIVATION:
■ 1. Intrinsic Motivation: This comes from within an individual. It’s the
desire to do something because it is inherently interesting or
enjoyable. For example, someone might read a book because they
love the story, not because they have to for a class.
■ 2. Extrinsic Motivation: This involves external factors that influence
behaviour. It includes rewards or pressures from the outside, such
as money, grades, or praise. For instance, a student might study
hard to earn a good grade or to receive recognition from their
parents.
FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE MOTIVATION
1. Personal Goals: Clear and achievable goals can enhance motivation, as
individuals are more likely to be driven when they have a purpose.
2. Environment: A supportive and positive environment can boost
motivation, while a negative or stressful environment can hinder it.
3. Social Influences: The presence of supportive friends, family, or peers can
increase motivation, while criticism or lack of support can decrease it.
4. Self-Efficacy: Believing in one’s ability to succeed can
enhance motivation, whereas low self-confidence can
lead to decreased motivation.
5. Rewards and Incentives: External rewards, such as
praise or tangible benefits, can motivate individuals to
perform tasks or reach goals.
6. Interest and Enjoyment: Intrinsic motivation is higher
when individuals find the task enjoyable or interesting,
while tasks that feel tedious or boring can lower
motivation.
