Printers Row was home to many printing companies in the late 1800s and early 1900s due to its proximity to Dearborn Station. In the 1950s, many printing companies moved away as their equipment got larger, leaving Printers Row deserted. One of the major printers was M.A. Donohue & Co, which was established in 1861 and eventually specialized in children's books before moving away in 1971. Dearborn Station, which opened in 1885, was an important transportation hub but fell into disuse before being converted to retail and office space.
