PROBLEM-POSING SESSION PLAN (based on 4Mat Learning Styles by Bernice McCarthy)<br />Title:Problem-Posing (based on work by  Paolo Freire/Brazil)<br />Presenter:Aj  Peggy Seufert<br />Time:45 minutes<br />Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: (Content  Focus): Thinking/creative problem-solving skills and exchanging ideas/ opinions<br />Thinking Skills:identify potential sources of a problem (based on visual or event)discuss potential source(s)  of problem (include different perspective/opinions)brainstorm different potential solutions (based on the context from different perspectives) develop action plan AND initiate actionLanguage Skills (listening and speaking): Orally:  sharing ideas/opinions; asking others for their opinions/ideassharing ideas/opinions; asking others for their opinions/ideasagreeing and disagreeing Cultural Skills (interpreting visual, exploring different perspectives)Objective:  Based on a field trip or visual, learners will identify environmental problem)(s), brainstorm potential solutions, develop an action plan, and initiate activities. (Note:  in real life, this would be strengthened by follow up assessment of the changes (e.g. cleanliness, recycling bins, more room to play, pride, or need for support from SAO or parents etc.) based on the results of their action plan)Materials:  Comix with 2 students talking about all the plastic bottles in the school yard(other ideas might be using photos of a local area or taking a walk in nature)<br />Session Plan: Sample<br />Motivation(aka warm-up or prime the pump)Show visual of students discussing all the plastic bottle/trashs in the school yard.Ask students to tell you what they see.  List on the board.Ask them how they feel about what they see.Presentation(content or learning/teaching strategy is shared)ASK:  What is the problem?   A. Give students  1 minute to prepare their thoughts.B. Conduct as a brainstorm. List their ideas on the blackboard.  Encourage all students to share what they thought.All ideas are to be accepted (Multilevel class:  stronger student can write ideas on the board with teacher support)Practice(playing with the new technique or learning strategy; how does this work?)Have students work in groups or pairs to focus.Using the list of brainstormed problems, ask each group to identify reasons why different problems exist. ( if there are many problems, the teachers can assign different problems to different groups)Each group decides which problem and idea they will focus. Each group brainstorms actions they could take to solve the problem.Groups prepare how they will present their ideas.ENTER THE “DEVIL’s ADVOCATE “ – a little language lesson for Thai Teacher Trainers… Ad + Voc = to give voice to or to support. In Romance languages the word for lawyer is similar to advocate (Spanish = abogado)  Have we seen this word in English newspapers  recently?Application(how can trainers or students  use the language or ideas?)Groups present their action plan (ideas)HOMEWORK:  Student s THINK about the ideas they like best (i.e., it does not have to be their own or their groups’  idea).  Each student should prepared to VOTE for 5 actions. [this number may vary depending on the ideas presented by the groups] PLANNING: Teachers need note the environmental actions from the student groups presentations.  Teacher prepares voting process (e.g., how the votes will be tabulated)CLASS: Vote
