Social change refers to alterations in a society's social order, institutions, behaviors, or relations. All cultures experience both forces that encourage change through new ideas and forces that encourage resisting change for stability. There are three general sources of influence that can cause both social change and resistance: 1) Forces within a society like new inventions or loss of cultural practices; 2) Contact between societies through processes like diffusion of new ideas and practices, acculturation of one culture by another, or transculturation of individuals adopting a new culture; 3) Changes in the natural environment.
