Professional communication is the study of written,
oral, digital, and visual communication practices within
professional fields. This discipline links theories and
tools from rhetoric, linguistics, and visual design
together with social, critical, and pedagogical theories
in order to investigate communication practices in
fields such as health care, law, government,
journalism, business, advertising, science, and
technology.
The School of Professional Communication (ProCom) offers
a BA, a designated Minor, and a Master of Professional
Communication (MPC) degree and provides courses to
numerous academic programs across Ryerson and to the
G. Raymond Chang School of Continuing Education.
ProCom instructors have published on Aboriginal world
views, health communication, mobile technology, new
media and their influence on learning environments,
risk and corporate communications, speech-writing in
the context of Israeli politics, and visual rhetoric.

Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS)
The Ontario Graduate Scholarship has a value of
$15,000 and is awarded to the incoming student
with the highest ranking, based on academic
excellence and graduate potential displayed in their
application for admission.

The International Association of Business
Communicators (IABC) Gold Quill Awards recognize
and award excellence in strategic communication
worldwide. Gold Quill is the only awards program
that honours the dedication, innovation, and
passion of communicators on a global scale.

IABC GOLD QUILL AWARDS

IABC Gold Quill Merit Award for
Communication Management
The IABC Gold Quill Communication Management
division covers projects, programs and campaigns
that are guided by a communication strategy. The
2015 winning ProCom submission, entitled 120 Diner
Digital Content Strategy, was initially developed by
MPC students Ian Ray Barcarse, Monica Batac, Corinne
Graham, Taylor Maclean and Danielle Taylor for
PC8005: The Virtual Organization, a required course in
the MPC program.
Informed by communication theory and supported by
original research, the team created a comprehensive
strategic communication plan for 120 Diner, a local
Toronto eatery, to enhance the restaurant’s reputation
and visibility through digital marketing and online
communications.
IABC GOLD QUILL
SHARON BERZOK AWARD
The IABC’s Gold Quill Sharon Berzok Student Award
is presented to the student achieving the highest
standard of communication excellence in the IABC Gold
Quill Award student categories. The winning entrant
received a US$500 scholarship to use for professional
development, education or training.

UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM AWARDS
Jacqueline Atkins Award
Each yea,r $1000 is awarded to a student
whose work embodies the principles of clarity,
correctness, integrity and audience consideration.
All students in CMN 100, CMN 124, CMN 201,
CMN 207, CMN 279, CMN 300, and CMN 373 are
automatically eligible for this award. Nominees
must have achieved an A- or higher in their CMN
course and be in clear standing.

The Jacqueline Atkins Award for Excellence in
Business Correspondence honours a pioneer in the
teaching of business communication in Canada
and in the building of a strong collegial system at
Ryerson.
In her own dealings with students, colleagues and
administrators, Ms. Atkins exemplified business
communication at its finest. In everything she said
or wrote, she strived to be accurate, honest, and
considerate of her listeners or readers.
Equally important was her role as mentor.
Professor Atkins reached out and influenced the
next generation of teachers in her discipline.
Hence, her values and standards are a permanent
part of the School of Professional Communication
at Ryerson University.
As teacher, colleague, mentor and friend,
Jacqueline Atkins will always be remembered at
Ryerson.

UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM AWARDS
Les McIlroy Memorial Award
Established in memory of Les McIlroy, this $1000
award recognizes a student who has achieved a
minimum grade of A- in CMN 210 Text, Image and
Sound and demonstrates a compassionate and
egalitarian approach to humanity through public
or community volunteer work and through an
understanding of the role of ethics in professional
communication.

This award was established in memory of Les
McIlroy who passed away in January 2011. Mr.
McIlroy was a Renaissance man who liked to say
that during his career he sold everything from
Tide to oil and the federal government. During
his professional life, he held senior positions at a
number of major corporations and worked with
many others as a
consultant: Proctor & Gamble; Ogilvy & Mather;
Bristol-Myers; Bushnell Communications and
Manulife Financial.
In addition, he was Chief of Staff to several federal
cabinet ministers. He continued his interest in
public policy as Executive-in-Residence for several
years at
the Public Policy Forum. In his later years, he
guestlectured at several Canadian universities and
authored the book, “The Managers’ Mentor.”
Mr. McIlroy was particularly interested in
mentoring young people pursuing professions
related to marketing, public relations and
communications.
