What is book study?
 A group of professional educators
meeting regularly to engage in critical
reading, discussion, and continued
learning with the purpose of enhancing
teaching and increasing student
achievement.

with effective professional
development?
 Requires collaboration with peers
 Through discussion of content a deeper
understanding is acquired
 Opportunities to apply new knowledge in the
classroom with focus on student learning
 Multiple sessions over a period of time

Steps to initiate a book study
 Determine focus of your group (area of
need, new curriculum, way of work, etc.)
 Choose book
 Develop a timeline for reading the book
and meeting
 Decide who will facilitate sessions
(teacher w/training, member of group
assigned for each session, etc.)

During the book study
 Talk, talk, talk (share ideas, ask questions)
 Identify ideas that can be applied to the
classroom
 Identify potential obstacles for
implementation of new ideas/strategies
 Facilitator keeps discussion focused

After the book study
 Reflect on what worked and what didn’t
 Plan follow up to analyze results of
implementation of strategies/practices
 Share examples of student work/observation
notes/data
