Automation= “moves its self”
Automation is a set of
technologies that results in operation
of machines and systems without
significant human intervention and
achieves performance superior to
manual operation.
Levels:
• Supervisor level e.g., IPC
• Control level e.g., PLC
• Field level e.g., components
Advantage:

• With the help of 24 V AC/DC contactors can control up to 600 V AC
• Relays often have normally closed contacts; contactors usually do not
(when de-energized, there is no connection)
• Switching times are much faster for relays
• A relay is an electrically operated switch
• Contactor is a device which can control the higher amount of ‘I’ & ‘V’
with the help of lower amount of ‘I’ &’V’. Same relay also but ,there is a
difference in Arrangement.

Morley,1969)
• Allen Bradley (U.S.A) --- PLC (Rockwell solution)
What is a PLC?
• A special computer device used for industrial control systems.
• e.g., oil refineries, manufacturing lines, conveyor systems & so on.
• The components that make a PLC work.
• The power supply and rack
• The central processing unit (CPU)
• The input/output (I/O) section

Communications of PLCs –Module to Module, PC to PLC, PLC to PLC.
Advantages of PLC’s:-
PLCs not only are capable of performing the same tasks as hard-wired
control, but are also capable of many more complex applications.
• Smaller physical size then hard-wire solutions
• Easier and faster to make changes
• PLCs have integrated diagnostics and override functions
• Diagnostics are centrally available
• Applications can be immediately documented
• Applications can be duplicated faster and less expensively

SIMATIC manager software
The SIMATIC manager is the basic application by which we can perform the
following functions in SIMATIC manager.
• Set up project
• Configure and assign parameter to hardware network
• Debug and commission our programs
Varies versions of the STEP 7 Standard package:
• STEP 7 Micro/DOS and STEP 7 Micro/Win for simpler stand-alone
applications on the SIMATIC S7-200.
• STEP 7 for applications on SIMATIC S7-300/S7-400 with a wider range of
functions.
