MACRAMÉ
A Beginner’s Tutorial
Macramé is a form
of textile-making
using knotting rather
than weaving or
knitting.
 Macramé became
most recently popular
during the early
1970’s due to its utility
and reasonable supply
price.
History
 It can be created
out of almost any
kind of cording,
though vinyl yarn
and hemp twine
are the most
popular.
Materials
What can I make?
 Because the knotted
pattern makes the
cording very sturdy,
almost any structure
can be built using
macramé.
What is practical?
 Most people use
macramé to make
jewelry and plant
holders.

Half-Hitch
The Square Knot
 The Square Knot is the
most commonly used
knot. Most macramé
art is composed of a
series of these knots.

Breaking Down the Steps: Step 1
 Begin with two long
strands of cording,
tied to a sturdy base.
 Cross one strand over
the other.
Breaking Down the Steps: Step 2
 Cross the strand under
the other and through,
to form a knot.
 Repeat the process
using the other strand
first.
Breaking Down the Steps: Step 3
 The knot should now
look like this when
loose.
 Tighten the knot to
gain structural
strength.
 Repeat to create
pattern.
