Supply, Install, Educate and Train in use of Bio Sand water Filters (BSF) 300 communities in Lurigancho Chosica district, with a population of one million people, out of 10 million in the department of Lima, Peru (28 million). Water that comes from Rimac river, originating in the Andes, carrying mineral, chemical, refuse and faecal contaminants, affecting east side poor populations. CLEAN WATER FOR PERU
BIO SAND WATER FILTERS LID Prevents dirt and impurities from entering the filter. DIFFUSER PLATE Protects biological layer when water is poured in. Biological layer Schmutzdecker Keeps biological filter layer system alive FINE SAND Retains bacteria and contaminants. EXIT TUBE Passes filtered water to the exterior container. GRAVEL Helps the flow of water toward the exit tube. COARSE SAND Keeps fine sand separate from gravel.
For use mainly in homes, schools orphanages, churches & social orgs. Produces 1.2 litrs in 2 min, enough daily clean water for 10/15 people No electricity, maintenance or spare parts required, last for ever Need to pour water periodically, allowing rest time between pours. Weight : Empty: 72kg (158 lbs), Full 160 kg (352 lbs) - Height 1.05m (41inch). Four Sides: 0.35m (14inch). For better quality, add 4 drops of bleach per liter of water filtered. Water containing chlorine should not be filtered, kills the biological layer, Schmutzdecker (German). Coarse Gravel Fine Gravel
COMMUNITY SELLECTION EDES NGO, specialist in water solutions, survey identified the real need for BSF in Lurigancho Chosica red areas was 5,000 filters
After a sucessfull 50 BSF installation in ‘27 de Junio’ RC La Molina Vieja with RC Holmen Wisconsin decided to install 250 filters with MG66806 in ‘Cerro Camote’ Lurigancho Chosica. We are now looking for partners to add several packages of 100 to 120 filters (average cost $ 100 per filter/ training) to rescue as many families as we can from cosuming highly contaminated water from Rimac river in Lurigancho Chosica, Peru.
Water is consumed by communities settled five meters from the river shore (wells) to 10 kmts away; carried by trucks, stored in cilinders, aereal tanks and hosed down to distribution points, to be later carried in buckets to individual homes.
N=14 WELLS at ’27 DE JUNIO COMMUNITY’ (first BSF installed) Wells were highly contaminated with fecal matter (99% samples), no pharasites. The study identified the river as the major source of pollution, however, surface contamination of uncovered wells were also causes of infection.
Workshops, focus groups and surveys used to promote health awareness, education and BSF usage at each home. Weekly diarrhe incidences were evaluated before and after BSF and the result was that children reduced this infection by half.    Community members decided the filter was the solution to their water problem and embrace with pride the BSF project. Survey Results
BEFORE BSF: More than 60% of children had infestations of Giardia lamblia (70%) and Blastocystis hominis (40%). AFTER BSF: Mothers noted that half of the children stopped suffering from chorinic diarrhea and lab analisis showed bacterial removal improved to 98.6% Health improvements
Educational sessions focusing on hygiene messages to protect infants against diarrhea: washing hands before preparing food and after using the toilet, safely disposing of infant faeces, and safely storing water in the house to prevent microbial re-contamination Training workshops
