Write down a number between 1 and 4.
Don’t tell anyone your number.
Ice Breaker
Give your name
Answer the question based on the
number you wrote down:
1. What is Project Management?
2. Name a key aspect of Project
Management
3. Name a project you played an
integral role in.
4. Name a project you will be or
wish to plan in the future.
What is a
Project?
A project is a temporary endeavor undertaken
to create a unique product, service or result.
A project is temporary in that it has a defined
beginning and end time, with a defined scope
and resources.
A project is unique in that it is not a routine
operation, but a specific set of operations
designed to accomplish a singular goal.
A project team may include people who don’t
usually work together, even from different
organizations and across multiple geographies.
What is Project Management?
Project management is the practice of initiating, planning, executing, controlling, and
closing the work of a team to achieve specific goals and meet specific success criteria at
the specified time. The primary challenge of project management is to achieve all the
project goals within the given constraints.
Initiating
The Project Initiation Phase is the first phase in the Project Management Life
Cycle, and defines the project’s:
OBJECTIVES SCOPE PURPOSE FEASIBILITY DELIVERABLES TO
BE PRODUCED
Planning
The Project Planning Phase is the second phase in the
project life cycle. It involves creating of a set of plans to
help guide your team through the execution and closure
phases of the project. The plans created during this
phase will help you to manage time, cost, quality,
change, risk and issues.
Planning is needed to identify desired goals, reduce
risks, avoid missed deadlines, and ultimately deliver the
agreed product, service or result. Without careful
planning, project performance is almost certainly
guaranteed to suffer.
Executing
Project execution (or implementation) is the phase in which the plan
designed in the prior phases of the project life is put into action. The
purpose of project execution is to deliver the project expected results
(deliverable and other direct outputs).
It is usually the longest phase in the project management life cycle and
consumes the most energy and resources
Monitoring and Controlling
The Monitoring and Controlling process oversees all the tasks and metrics necessary to ensure
that the approved and authorized project is within scope, on time, and on budget so that the
project proceeds with minimal risk. ... Monitoring and Controlling process is continuously
performed throughout the life of the project.

Scope
“The work that needs to be accomplished to deliver a product,
service, or result with the specified features and functions.”
Project scope is the part of project planning that involves
determining and documenting a list of specific project goals,
deliverables, features, functions, tasks, deadlines, and ultimately
costs. In other words, it is what needs to be achieved and the
work that must be done to deliver a project.
Scope Work
Breakdown
Structure
A work breakdown structure
(WBS) is a key project
deliverable that organizes the
team's work into manageable
sections.
Sections can be based on
categories or phases of the
project.
Project Tasks are listed within
the sections.
Time (Scheduling)
The Project Schedule is determined by the Work Breakdown
Structure and identifies the start and end date of each
project activity and phase of the project, as well as the date
of each Project Milestone. The schedule also determines the
sequence and float of activities, the resources assigned, and
the critical path of the project.
A critical path is the sequence of project network activities
which add up to the longest overall duration, regardless if
that longest duration has float or not. This determines the
shortest time possible to complete the project.

Cost (Budget)
Cost management is the process of estimating, allocating,
and controlling the costs in a project. It allows predicting
coming expenses in order to reduce the chances of it going
over budget. Projected costs are calculated during the
planning phase of a project and must be approved before
work begins.
The Project Cost is determined by the Work Breakdown
Structure and Schedule Baseline and cost of each project
activity and phase of the project.
