Effective questioning has four characteristics:1- Frequency.2- Equitable distribution.3- prompting.4- Wait-time.
What is prompt?Prompt is a teacher question or directive that elicits a students response after the student has failed to answer or has given an incorrect or incomplete answer.
As an illustration, let’s look at a dialogue from Teri’s lessonTeri: now let’s go a bit farther . What other patterns do you see in the descriptions? Kim?Kim: (No response)Teri: How were the shipped, Kim?Kim: On ships.Teri: Yes, good, Kim! What ships, or whose ships?Kim: … In each case it was the ships from the parent country.
As we saw, when Kim didn’t respond correctly, Teri asked another question, then asked Kim to expand on her answer with an additional question.This is the essence of prompting.
