public vs private
- 1. Public .Vs. Private As a group we chose our final idea for the documentary topic: Public School verses Private School. Our first reason for this is that a member of our group went to private school and joined our public sixth form for her further education. This gave us a good opportunity to look into the experience and to make accurate comparisons between public and private schools. We want to compare a number of things in our documentary that will all round sum up a conclusion. The comparisons we plan to make include: Sport facilities, classrooms, uniform, test results, location, behaviour, teaching. All of these will allow us to work out if paying for private school is really worth it. We aim to prepare interviews that will gain us interesting answers that back up the point we are trying to make. It is important that we interview both teachers and students to get a wider outlook on opinions and what it is like to teach and be taught at both different schools. Finally we will look at overall statistics to use as evidence.
- 2. Documentary Form We decided the form after we chose the subject so that we could keep the form suitable to match what we were going to be filming about. The whole documentary will be participatory with elements of expository due to the exposing of each school and the bits behind the scenes. The interviews will all be participatory as our group are getting involved in asking questions and being on the actual footage. We are all students at a public school so our opinions and facts are completely relevant to what we are trying to portray to our audience. We did think about making the documentary fit into the poetic side of things until we realised that it wouldn’t be appropriate because we were not going to be experimental and narrate the whole documentary on our opinions with footage and music, we want our documentary to be much more educational than this which is why we decided it was important to stick to participatory as it matches the subject and will be suitable.
- 3. Planning We think it is important to make our documentary different to what has been done before and from research we have carried out there hasn’t been a documentary that looks at the comparisons between the two types of school and think it is important to create an engaging yet educational documentary that has a huge range for a target audience. We are keeping the interviews ranged between teachers and students to get both views on public school and private school because we knew for a fact that teachers would be more biased and students would be completely honest with what we have to ask them. The documentary will be short and to the point so squeezing everything in without making it rushed is going to be a difficult task, but as long as we keep on top of things we should be fine. We have already made a timeline as to what we should do and when we should do it so sticking to this will allow us to meet our full potential and create a successful documentary.
- 4. Roles in the Group As a group we all agreed that sharing the roles was the best idea for us. This means we can all help each other out with each aspect of making the documentary. We will all do some filming and will work together to edit the final thing. We have all had the same amount of experience so all have an equal ability and decided if we planned as a group then we would carry on sharing ideas as we went on meaning we make the most out of each others suggestions. We have already done all of the planning, now we need to start filming some footage. At least one member of our group must get involved in the footage itself to keep it participatory. We can then import all of our footage together and edit everything until every member of the group is fully satisfied. If we feel anything is missing it is all of our responsibility to make sure we pick up the footage we need as soon as we can. It is important that we all take an equal amount of responsibility so that it is fair for all of us and we can all work well together.
- 5. How to Interest Our Audience In general our subject is enough to gain interest from our target audience. This means that we need to make sure we meet the set standard. We have aimed our documentary at every age group other than toddlers and young children. Teenagers will find it interesting because they are all students at either a public or private school, adults will find it interesting because they would have been to schools and may be parents or plan on having children and will want to see the differences so they will know where to send their kids in the future. And finally the elderly will find it interesting as they will be informed and educated about how schools work nowadays, they all have high opinions and expectations and will all find it interesting to see how schools work in the modern day. This means it is important that we use terminology to meet all criteria's and to suit every group in our target audience. This shouldn’t be difficult as long as we keep the interview questions appropriate and encourage interesting answers and reactions.
