                    We're entering a very different era … there's going to be a

simply waiting for asset values to recover is not an option

                    Shrinking Corporates, Empowered Individuals
The state often struggles to provide services as well as the private sector, because the
“survival instinct” is a powerful motivator too often absent when working in the public
sector. “ … only the ruthless and raw ambition of the private sector can revive the
                        economy” – Peter Mandeleson, 8th Jan 2010
There is a growing tide of employee sentiment that values independence and freedom
in the choice of work undertaken, and the ability to choose who they work for.
Governments and unions need to recognise this movement, and seek new ways to
support “employees”, as they increasingly embrace the world of entrepreneurialism.
                    Changes in Corporate Working Practice
Employers care about the skills employees bring, but perceive that not everyone
provides good training skills and knowledge. This is often more the case where training
is not in itself a speciality.
Traditional employers have been very slow grasping new and more varied working
methods, moving away from “command and rule”, and more towards “teams of all the
                        talents”.

Management skills are today still in short supply, and therefore continue to have raised
value in the skills market place
The growth of outsourcing, and the shrinkage of large corporates means that smaller
business units are gradually becoming the norm. Business to business skills must be
acquired faster, sooner and through more reliable methods.

4 London College of Management Studies

Globalisation, and How We Perceive It
Globalisation is still a very unknown quantity. Many of us fail to
understand it with enough detail. However, increasingly, the
trend towards a small accessible world, with international
partnerships becoming ever easier, is likely to continue. We all
need to learn how to be global citizens, particularly those who
have been accustomed to having things all their own way, such
as in the Global Banking sectors.
All trends point towards the empowerment of the individual,
together with a need for significantly enhanced levels of
knowledge and skill, which award us new levels of “freedom”.
More public resources need to be directed towards ensuring
that citizens have the necessary levels of empowerment, and
are supported as and where needed.

Global ethics are starting to become a significant factor in the
business world, and corporate social responsibility outside the
direct business arena is also gaining support.

What are the underlying trends ?
Skills and knowledge still play the most vital part in human
development. Education is still the route to growth and
                      freedom.
A probably majority of employers and managers have not
grasped well the need to connect employees with each other,
and with task diversity that holds their interest.
Larger corporates are like the proverbial ocean going liner,
very slow to change direction. Those employees who bring true
creativity to an organisation are likely to be seen as change
agents, able to bring progress faster, sooner, and with better
                      outcomes.
Globalisation continues apace, with the need to speak common
business languages and share plans becoming a critical
                      business enabler.

What conclusions can we draw ?
We may be witnessing a significant shift in the relationship
between employees and employers, suppliers and clients.
Are employers and clients entirely ready for this ?

Questions you can ask about employers and clients
                    1. What value is placed in employee knowledge, growth, training and
                         personal empowerment ?
                    2. What working methods does the employer use which connect
employees, and motivate them in their daily work and the tasks they
are charged with and responsible for ?
                    3. How do employers reward individual contribution, and what value do
                         they place on creativity ?
                    4. How global is the employer, how well do they embrace the potential
for global connection and operation ?
Q&A - How likely is it employers will have full capability ?

when they are absent ? How ready is the employer for the above
conversations ? How would you explore them in an interview ? How
might you introduce them as a new employee or supplier ?

Do their needs and your needs combine effectively ?
Is the role they see the role you want ?
Will you have to introduce new technical skills ?
Will you have to alter existing business culture ?
Do you want to learn, or establish reputation ?
Finding a leading business practitioner is great, but rare
Introducing change is often harder than we think
Is there scope for growth and learning ?

What did you discover ? How will you put findings to work ?
                    6. Aiming High, Yet Willing to Compromise
We should always aim for the best for ourselves
This often will give the best for all concerned
“Doing our best to be our best” wins real respect from others
Financial needs often compromise growth needs
Nobody gets 100% of what they want
Never close doors – instead consider ways you could cope

  • 4. What Does it Mean ? Presentation – Peter Jones – PWW Shrinking Corporates, Empowered Individuals The state often struggles to provide services as well as the private sector, because the “survival instinct” is a powerful motivator too often absent when working in the public sector. “ … only the ruthless and raw ambition of the private sector can revive the economy” – Peter Mandeleson, 8th Jan 2010 There is a growing tide of employee sentiment that values independence and freedom in the choice of work undertaken, and the ability to choose who they work for. Governments and unions need to recognise this movement, and seek new ways to support “employees”, as they increasingly embrace the world of entrepreneurialism. Changes in Corporate Working Practice Employers care about the skills employees bring, but perceive that not everyone provides good training skills and knowledge. This is often more the case where training is not in itself a speciality. Traditional employers have been very slow grasping new and more varied working methods, moving away from “command and rule”, and more towards “teams of all the talents”. www.londoncms.com Management skills are today still in short supply, and therefore continue to have raised value in the skills market place The growth of outsourcing, and the shrinkage of large corporates means that smaller business units are gradually becoming the norm. Business to business skills must be acquired faster, sooner and through more reliable methods. 4 London College of Management Studies
  • 5. What Does it Mean ? Presentation – Peter Jones – PWW Globalisation, and How We Perceive It Globalisation is still a very unknown quantity. Many of us fail to understand it with enough detail. However, increasingly, the trend towards a small accessible world, with international partnerships becoming ever easier, is likely to continue. We all need to learn how to be global citizens, particularly those who have been accustomed to having things all their own way, such as in the Global Banking sectors. All trends point towards the empowerment of the individual, together with a need for significantly enhanced levels of knowledge and skill, which award us new levels of “freedom”. More public resources need to be directed towards ensuring that citizens have the necessary levels of empowerment, and are supported as and where needed. www.londoncms.com Global ethics are starting to become a significant factor in the business world, and corporate social responsibility outside the direct business arena is also gaining support. 5 London College of Management Studies

  • 7. Putting Knowledge to Work Presentation – Peter Jones – PWW What are the underlying trends ? Skills and knowledge still play the most vital part in human development. Education is still the route to growth and freedom. A probably majority of employers and managers have not grasped well the need to connect employees with each other, and with task diversity that holds their interest. Larger corporates are like the proverbial ocean going liner, very slow to change direction. Those employees who bring true creativity to an organisation are likely to be seen as change agents, able to bring progress faster, sooner, and with better outcomes. Globalisation continues apace, with the need to speak common business languages and share plans becoming a critical business enabler. www.londoncms.com What conclusions can we draw ? We may be witnessing a significant shift in the relationship between employees and employers, suppliers and clients. Are employers and clients entirely ready for this ? 7 London College of Management Studies
  • 8. Putting Knowledge to Work Presentation – Peter Jones – PWW Questions you can ask about employers and clients 1. How do employers reward individual contribution, and what value do they place on creativity ? 4. How global is the employer, how well do they embrace the potential for global connection and operation ? Q&A - How likely is it employers will have full capability ? The roles of compromise, creativity, empathy and ethics Groups of 4 – tackling employer research and engagement What visible signs can we see about corporate employers in the four www.londoncms.com areas above ? Why are these factors important ? What happens when they are absent ? How ready is the employer for the above conversations ? How would you explore them in an interview ? How might you introduce them as a new employee or supplier ? Group feedback 8 London College of Management Studies
