Q2: How effective is the combination of your main products and ancillary texts?
What is a brand? A brand is not the same as a product, the brand is the make of a product. A brand creates an image so that the customers/ target audience can link that to the particular product. Branding works through creating an individual product and making it unique so that it will stand out from the rest, if companies didn’t use branding on their products then everything would be the same and wouldn’t attract any particular audience. Companies use the same logo on all of their products so that people can trust their products through the bond they create with using a logo, and so that people will know that no other product will taste and be the same as theirs therefore making it individual and to attract their target audience. For example Bird’s Eye offer a wide range of frozen food. People trust this company through its logo of a captain with it pirate on its shoulder therefore people will buy this product as they know to expect good quality food
What is a brand? A brand image is very important to artist as that way they are able to sell their tracks and records to their particular audience. Artists have many ways in which they create their brand image this is mainly done through their videos and their music and products. When we was researching about how we wanted our artist to have a brand image that people was able to associate with them, we looked at artists that had a particular and recognised brand image and how they showed it off. An artist that we looked at, that we wanted our artist to be like was Katy Perry. Katy Perry has a strong brand image of being ‘fun, feisty and sexy’ which is shown strongly through her videos, through her costume changes and dance moves which also reflects her personality so people are able to see the real Katy Perry and like her as she able to be unique. Katy Perry has a similar brand image to our own which we intend to follow through our music video. The album cover produced by Katy Perry is really showing of her brand image of ‘fun, feisty and sexy.’ As she is sat on a sun lounger wearing fashionable clothing ‘shorts and sun top’ posing in a feisty and sexy way is definitely showing of her brand image. The background is bright and high key lighting has been used which is very typical of her brand image but also of her type of music ‘pop’.
What is our brand image? A brand image for any particular artist is very important as it shows of their target audience but also their success in the music industry. After looking different genre’s of music our artist would fit in, we chose pop genre as we feel this would appeal to our chosen audience (13-18) so we wanted to follow the typical conventions of a pop music video, which consisted of: - fun, young artist - following typical ideology of ‘love’ - experimenting with different clothing ideas - follow Todorov’s narrative - Realism To achieve the above we will include everyone of them in our video and ancillary task at some part, therefore we will be following typical conventions to make our video as success to the pop genre.
What is our brand image? In order to achieve our chosen brand image, we had to research in to pop music videos which has been successful in the music industry but the music videos which associated with our ideas. Miley Cyrus- Party In The USA Pixie Lott- Gravity Katy Perry- Hot N Cold These are some of the music videos we watched and analysis that had the particular conventions we wanted. So we took some of the ideas and included them in our own video
What is our brand image? The young, girly, outgoing brand image we created followed the typical conventions of a pop music video, we thought this would be more successful idea and would gain more success in the music industry and the charts. We wanted to create our brand image to fit in with pop genre and to do this we used mise en scene such as location, costumes, actors and props. Our video was studio based as we was able to create backgrounds via the green screen but also as a lot of pop music videos do it this way as it cheaper but you are able to add your own effects. We thought about doing it on location shot but we didn’t know what place would be best to shoot our video so we followed conventions and based it in the studio.
Mise En Scene We followed the conventions of mise en scene so that it would fit with our brand image. For our actress she had a numerous amount of costume changes to create the girly and pop genre effect but this was also done as it reflected the type of brand image we created. We dressed her in dresses, glitter, heels that sort of outfits that our genre should wear and we made sure the clothing gave off the young and girly brand image. The artist also proved this as she was young and outgoing which pop genre videos follow.
Ancillary Task
Our Brand Image Looking at our ancillary products, you can see that all our products follow the same brand image as the music video which is using lots of bright colours. This follows our brand image because it stands out to our audience that it is pop genre. We have also used our actress (Star) in all of our products, as well in our music video, we made sure that she was wearing something girly but also bright to follow the conventions of pop but also because we have made the video and the print products colourful and attractive so we wanted Star to be the same. The two insides we combined the colours together so that it relates to the start and end of our music video, this also looks very effective when opening the CD case. We stuck to the same font style throughout the products so that it all fitted in. The Promotional advertisement is brightly coloured pink, which makes it stand out to people but also our actress Star in wearing bright pink dress which matches the background to give it a more girly and pop look.
Following Conventions Through our music video and ancillary task we followed the typical conventions of a pop genre music video. This was successful cause people would know what genre our music video is situated with. We did this by mise en scene/ camera/ location. According to Andrew Goodwin who believes there are certain elements you have to follow to make a successful music video, he believed that there is a link between visuals and lyrics which illustrates, contradicts or amplifies the lyrics, we decide to insert some of the lyrics in our video where Star is stood texting on her phone this was effective as it matched the lyrics in time. Pete Fraser who also believes the same as Andrew Goodwin believes there is a relationship between the music video and the lyrics which we followed through our music video as we believe the same so we made sure each lyric created something for the audience. Our music video followed the typical conventions of pop genre through following the typical ideology of ‘love’. We decided this worked well as love is good, and most pop music videos follows this typical ideology. Part of our song which relates to love is: Lets go all the way tonight no regrets just love we can dance until we die You and I we’ll be young forever
